Born in Kolkata in 1955, Mukherjee entered the film industry at the age of 17 with her debut in Chitta Bose’s film, Shesh Parba, released in 1972. In this film, she starred alongside Shamit Bhanja, marking the beginning of her illustrious career. Her breakthrough role came with Dinen Gupta’s Marjina Abdulla, where she portrayed the lead character, and her performance was well received.

Throughout her career, Mukherjee developed a versatile portfolio, featuring in films such as Nishikanya, Mouchak, Kabi, Hotel Snow Fox, Pratima, Bandhan, Prarthana, and Swayamsiddha. Contributions to Bengali and Hindi Cinema

In addition to her success in Bengali films, Mukherjee also ventured into Hindi cinema. Her initial entry into this sphere was with Dulal Guha’s Khaan Dost in 1976, and she further established herself with appearances in Basu Chatterjee’s Safed Jhoot, along with other notable films such as Dillagi and Do Ladke Dono Kadke. These performances demonstrated her versatility and broadened her appeal across different regional film industries.

While Mukherjee’s career flourished throughout the 1980s, she gradually began to withdraw from the public eye. After her role in the 1980 film Dujane, she took a hiatus from acting. It was only in 1990 that she returned to the screen in Chandra Barot’s Ashrita, which marked her last acting role.
