The newly inaugurated Barapullah Phase-III elevated corridor is poised to dramatically shorten travel times for those travelling from Noida and East Delhi to South Delhi. This infrastructure is set to reduce the journey between the eastern regions of Delhi and the AIIMS area from approximately 35 to 40 minutes to as little as 15 minutes, contingent on traffic conditions.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah officiated the inauguration of this long-awaited corridor on Tuesday. The project is part of a broader development initiative comprising four significant road infrastructure projects in Delhi, collectively valued at ₹1,941 crore.

The ceremony at Barapullah was attended by notable leaders including Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Public Works Department Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh, Minister Kapil Mishra, Union Minister of State for Road Transport Harsh Malhotra, and other prominent figures from Delhi.

Seamless Connectivity Through Signal-Free Route

The Barapullah Phase-III corridor is designed to facilitate uninterrupted, signal-free travel between Mayur Vihar Phase-I in East Delhi and the AIIMS vicinity in South Delhi. This extensive elevated corridor connects seamlessly with the existing Barapullah flyover at Sarai Kale Khan, creating an almost 9-km continuous route.

According to reports, the overall length of the completed Barapullah stretch is around 10 km. The new corridor is specifically expected to benefit commuters journeying from Mayur Vihar, Noida, and nearby areas towards Sarai Kale Khan, AIIMS, and various locations in South Delhi.

With the elimination of several traffic signals and congested sections along the route, authorities anticipate a notable decrease in travel time for those using the corridor.

Completion After Extended Delays

The Barapullah Phase-III project has experienced prolonged developmental delays. Initially approved in 2014, construction commenced in 2015, with an early completion target set for 2017. However, unforeseen delays resulted in increased costs, bringing the revised project expenditure to approximately ₹1,635 crore.

Delhi’s PWD Minister Parvesh Verma highlighted the extended timeline for the project, noting that the “11-year wait” for the Barapullah flyover has concluded. Verma stated that the commitment made last year to finish the corridor within a year has been fulfilled. He emphasized that for the past 18 months, the focus has solely been on practical work instead of political disputes.

The completion of the Phase-III corridor now enhances the broader Barapullah corridor network in Delhi, which has been developed incrementally to improve overall connectivity in the city and offer alternative routes for vehicles heading towards central and southern districts.

Multiple Infrastructure Projects Launched

The Barapullah Phase-III corridor is one of four major road infrastructure ventures inaugurated by Amit Shah on Tuesday, encompassing a total investment of ₹1,941 crore. The other projects include two newly constructed flyovers designed to mitigate traffic congestion in South Delhi, along with an underpass located on the Outer Ring Road in North Delhi.

During the event, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta praised the launch of these projects, attributing their realisation to what she termed the “power of a double-engine government.” She asserted that collaborative efforts between the Centre and the Delhi government are vital for the successful execution of long-stalled projects.

Gupta further noted her administration’s plans to initiate several additional projects aimed at alleviating traffic congestion in Delhi, an issue she claimed has been overlooked for the past 50 years.
