Authorities in Bengaluru have initiated a series of food safety inspections, specifically targeting outlets of the quick-commerce platform Swiggy Instamart and the local grocery shop, Leo Mart. This action follows complaints regarding potential violations of food safety standards. The Health Department carried out surprise inspections at these outlets, leading to the discovery of several expired food items being both stored and sold.

The officials reported that the premises were temporarily seized to facilitate further investigations into the alleged discrepancies. The seized products, along with relevant records, are currently under examination as part of this ongoing investigation. Authorities indicated that further actions would be dependent on the findings from these analyses.

This recent enforcement activity is part of a broader crackdown on food safety in Bengaluru, aiming to ensure compliance across various establishments including restaurants, hotels, clubs, warehouses, and food distribution facilities.

Previous Inspections Uncover Further Violations

Last month, inspections led by food safety officials identified unsanitary conditions at a Zepto warehouse operated by Nippon Express located in Bengaluru Rural. Reports from the inspection included visual evidence of food packages strewn across the floor, inappropriate storage of soft drinks and dairy products, and visible garbage scattered in the facility.

In addition to warehouses, the crackdown has also revealed issues in several prominent restaurants and hotels. For instance, at Skyye Lounge in UB City, officials found the kitchen to be in an unhygienic state, prompting an immediate closure. During this inspection, a total of 45 kg of spoiled chicken and beef was confiscated, some of which exhibited fungal growth. The authorities also seized 6 kg of vegetable cutlets and 15 litres of used cooking oil, along with dairy products that had expired approximately ten days prior.

A comprehensive investigation led to the seizure and disposal of 132 kg of food items across six premium dining establishments in UB City and Brigade Road. These ongoing inspections aim to highlight and rectify unsatisfactory food safety practices currently in play.

Extensive Crackdown on Food Safety Standards Across Various Establishments

The health and safety checks have also extended to three-star and five-star hotels, where inspectors encountered various violations. Reports revealed expired dairy and bakery items, poorly stored meat and fish, as well as instances of fungal contamination in vegetables. Furthermore, issues related to the labelling and segregation of vegetarian and non-vegetarian products were noted.

At The Radisson Blu (The Atria), inspectors confiscated a total of 105 kg of expired food items, comprising 50 kg of chicken, 23 kg of meat, 7 kg of fish, and 25 kg of vegetables. Other hospitality establishments such as The Lalit Ashok, Shangri-La Bengaluru, Four Seasons Hotel Bengaluru, Vivanta Bengaluru Whitefield, and Taj Yeshwantpur were also found to be in violation, with food products seized during inspections.

In addition to hotels and restaurants, food safety officials have also focused on clubs and food storage facilities that supply these major establishments. Notices have been issued to those found in violation of safety protocols, with authorities warning of potential legal consequences under established food safety regulations.
