Attukal Pongala Festival Highlights Kerala’s Cultural Legacy: Rajeev Chandrasekhar

The CSR Journal Magazine

Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the President of the Kerala BJP, emphasized the significance of the Attukal Pongala festival as a vital representation of the state’s cultural and spiritual heritage. During the festivities, he expressed pride in being part of this annual event that draws thousands of women to offer Pongala to the deity, Attukal Bhagavathy.

Chandrasekhar noted that the festival is a distinctive manifestation of faith and tradition. He stated that the event not only showcases the devotion of countless women but also embodies the essence of Kerala’s culture and heritage, making it a moment of pride for the people of the state.

He remarked, “There are many elements that characterize our great state. The Attukal Pongala celebration of faith, particularly the involvement of women in such large numbers, serves as an important highlight of Thiruvananthapuram’s cultural identity.”

Additionally, Chandrasekhar reflected on how the festival serves as a testament to the deep-rooted connections between faith and culture in Kerala’s history, despite numerous transformations over centuries. He said, “It is a reminder of how intrinsically linked our faith and culture are, even after so many years of historical progression.”

This year marked Chandrasekhar’s third participation in the festival, and he expressed his joy in being involved in the celebrations. He stated, “This is my third opportunity to participate. Of course, I’m very happy to be here.” His wife was unable to join him this year due to family commitments related to ongoing developments in the Middle East.

Chandrasekhar mentioned, “Unfortunately, my wife could not be here this time as she is with our children in the Middle East because of the ongoing developments.”

In the backdrop of the festival, significant geopolitical developments have unfolded, including retaliatory actions following US-Israel strikes against Iran, which caused disruptions across various regions. The festival, celebrated at the Attukal Bhagavathy Temple, is renowned as one of the largest gatherings of women for a religious occasion globally.

The Attukal Pongala festival not only signifies spiritual devotion but also illustrates the communal harmony among the participants, reinforcing the rich cultural tapestry of Kerala. It continues to draw attention as a remarkable event in the annual calendar, underscoring the integral connection between community, faith, and tradition.
