Daring Daytime Operation: Assam Rifles Rescues Two Abducted Labourers in Tirap, Arunachal Pradesh

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a swift and decisive operation on October 18, 2025, security forces operating under the SpearCorps banner successfully rescued two civilians abducted by cadres of the banned NSCN-K (Rebel) faction in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tirap District. The swift action averted a potential crisis and reaffirmed the commitment of the Assam Rifles to securing the volatile region.

The incident began in Laho village, Dadam Circle, when armed NSCN-K (Rebel) militants kidnapped two labourers from a local construction site. Acting immediately on specific intelligence inputs, multiple columns of the Assam Rifles were mobilised. They launched a meticulously coordinated search and rescue mission spanning the general area up to Nianu to locate the hostages and the perpetrators.

Encounter and Controlled Response

The operation culminated in a tense confrontation when the security team located the insurgents. According to reports, the militants, upon detecting the advancing forces, opened indiscriminate fire.

The Assam Rifles troops demonstrated exemplary restraint and professionalism during the firefight. Instead of engaging with overwhelming force, they retaliated in a highly controlled manner, prioritising the safety of the abducted civilians over neutralising the threat. This calculated response proved critical, leading to the successful rescue of both labourers completely unharmed and preventing any collateral damage.

The timely intervention effectively curtailed the NSCN-K’s subversive activities in the Laho village area. The rescued individuals have since been safely evacuated to Khonsa for medical examination and necessary assistance. A comprehensive search and sanitisation operation is currently underway in the area.

Precedent: Ongoing Insurgent Threat

This rescue is the latest in a series of security force actions against various insurgent groups, including the NSCN factions, which remain active in the Tirap, Changlang, and Longding (TCL) districts. These areas, strategically located near the Indo-Myanmar border, continue to grapple with threats of extortion and abduction.

The successful outcome mirrors recent operations in the region. For instance, in April 2025, a joint operation in the Longding district led to the neutralisation of three NSCN (KYA) cadres and the rescue of one construction worker, who had been kidnapped from the Pangchao area. Furthermore, the persistent pressure has resulted in a crackdown on the groups’ infrastructure, with multiple operatives—including a self-styled captain of the NSCN-(K-YA)—being arrested in Tirap in June 2025, severely undermining their local networks.

The latest swift rescue in Tirap serves as a powerful deterrent against attempts to terrorise the civilian population and highlights the constant readiness of the security forces.
