A 31-year-old man from Assam’s Jorhat district was reportedly beheaded over an alleged affair with his neighbour’s wife. The victim, identified as Anil Rajgarh, resided in the Greenview Tea Estate area of Mariani. According to statements from the police, Anil was reported missing on September 7, prompting his family to file a complaint at the Mariani Police Station. They expressed concern after he had not returned home for an unusual length of time.

Days later, Anil’s body was discovered near the Bhogdoi River, close to the riverside. Investigators noted that the victim’s throat had been cut with a blade before he was subsequently beheaded, suggesting a brutal murder. This incident has raised serious concerns in the community regarding safety and interpersonal relationships.

Arrests Made in Connection with the Murder

Following the recovery of Anil’s body, police arrested four individuals related to the crime. The suspects include Anima Karmakar, the wife of one of the accused, Kapil Karmakar, along with Kapil’s younger brother Sanjit Karmakar and their friend Mahesh Rajgarh. According to Mariani’s Sub-Divisional Police Officer, Trinayan Chamuah, Anil had allegedly been in frequent contact with Anima for several months leading up to the incident.

Reports suggest that Anima had lured Anil to a tea garden on the day he went missing, where it is alleged that her husband and the other two accomplices awaited him. Allegations indicate that Anima was the first to assault Anil with a blade, allowing the others to join in the attack, leading to his brutal murder.

After allegedly committing the crime, the suspects are said to have placed the body in a sack and transported it to the riverbank, where it was subsequently buried. The investigation team later retrieved a machete from the home of the accused, believed to be the weapon used during the murder.

Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Investigation

All four suspects have been charged under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which include murder, criminal conspiracy, and causing the disappearance of evidence. Police reports indicate that the accused have confessed to their involvement in the crime, providing critical details that led to their arrest.

A postmortem examination of Anil’s decomposed body was performed to confirm the cause of death and gather further evidence. The authorities have taken the necessary steps to ensure that the investigation progresses smoothly, collecting any additional information that could aid in the case.

Following their arrest, the four individuals were presented before a local court that remanded them to three days of police custody. The police continue to pursue the investigation to ensure all aspects of the crime are thoroughly examined, and the community remains informed about safety measures being taken in response to this shocking event.
