10 Army Personnel Killed as Vehicle Plunges into Gorge in J&K’s Doda

The CSR Journal Magazine

A heartbreaking accident claimed the lives of ten Indian Army soldiers on Thursday in the Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir, as their vehicle fell into a 200-foot-deep gorge near Khanni Top. Seven others sustained injuries, some critical, and were rushed to Udhampur military hospital for urgent treatment.

How the Accident Took Place?

The Army personnel were travelling to a high-altitude post when the driver lost control of the bullet-proof vehicle, a Casspir, on the treacherous Bhaderwah-Chamba interstate road. A coordinated rescue operation by the Army and local police recovered the injured and confirmed multiple fatalities.

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed his sorrow over the incident. “Deeply saddened at the loss of lives of 10 of our brave Indian Army soldiers in an unfortunate road accident in Doda. We will always remember the outstanding service and supreme sacrifice of our brave soldiers. My deepest condolences to the grieving families,” he said, adding, “In this moment of profound sorrow, the entire nation stands united with the bereaved families in solidarity and support. 10 Injured soldiers have been airlifted to the hospital. Directed the Senior officials to ensure best possible treatment. Praying for their speedy recovery.”

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also conveyed his condolences: “Deeply saddened by the tragic road accident in Doda in which we lost our 10 brave soldiers of the Indian Army. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. The injured soldiers are receiving medical care and all necessary directions have been given to ensure the best possible treatment. The nation stands with our Armed Forces and their families in this difficult hour.”

Rescue Efforts Ongoing

According to officials, four soldiers were initially found dead, and as rescue efforts continued, the death toll rose to ten. The injured include personnel in serious condition who required airlifting.

This incident is the latest in a series of accidents in Jammu and Kashmir’s mountainous regions. Just a few days ago, two army porters died after slipping into a gorge near the Line of Control in Gulmarg. Last year in May, three soldiers died when their vehicle skidded off a road in Ramban district and plunged into a 700-foot-deep gorge.

Authorities have urged extreme caution in high-altitude operations, noting the challenges soldiers face while moving through difficult terrain, often under unpredictable weather conditions.
