Apple Music Introduces Labels for AI-Generated Songs

The CSR Journal Magazine

Apple Music announced plans to introduce labels for songs generated by artificial intelligence, addressing the growing presence of AI in the music streaming sector. The initiative follows a similar move by Spotify, which recently began labelling artist profiles that represent AI-generated identities. Apple aims to enhance transparency for listeners regarding the extent of AI involvement in music creation.

Details on the Upcoming Labels

The labels will provide essential information about songs created with AI and will rely on transparency data submitted by record labels and music distributors. This change is designed to improve listener awareness of whether AI played a significant role in the music they consume. Existing AI transparency tags were introduced by Apple Music in March. However, those tags were primarily for use by record labels and distributors, lacking visibility to the general public.

Listeners will soon be able to see these labels on Apple Music, particularly when a track has a substantial portion attributed to AI-generated content. This update also encompasses music significantly derived from generative AI services. Although specific enforcement measures have yet to be detailed, Apple Music has made it clear that content providers must include these labels when relevant.

While a precise rollout date remains undisclosed, Apple Music has confirmed that the updates are scheduled for later this year. The decision to implement these labels comes amid increasing concern within the music industry regarding the influx of AI-generated content and the potential implications for listener experience, including the authenticity of music streams.

Current Landscape of AI Music Generation

Recent statistics from Apple Music indicate that AI-generated music is becoming more prominent, with over a third of new monthly uploads classified as AI-generated. Despite this increase in uploads, the actual listening rates for these songs have reportedly fallen below 1 per cent. This disparity suggests that while AI-generated music is being produced at an accelerated pace, listener engagement may not be keeping up.

In response to this trend, both Apple Music and Spotify are seeking to equip listeners with better information about the nature of the music available on their platforms. Spotify’s recent introduction of an “AI Persona” badge serves to mark artist profiles reflective of AI identities. This badge appears in various settings, such as artist pages and search results, signalling to users that the profile may not represent a human artist.

As AI continues to shape the music landscape, the need for such labels and transparency measures becomes increasingly urgent. Industry stakeholders are realising the importance of clarity in distinguishing between human-created and AI-generated content, which could potentially influence how listeners engage with music on these platforms.
