Even as Apple’s next iPhone lineup remains months away, early leaks surrounding the iPhone 18 Pro Max have started surfacing, pointing to a mix of subtle design changes and significant internal upgrades.
The device is expected to launch around September, in line with Apple’s usual release cycle. While the company is also reportedly working on its first foldable iPhone, the Pro series is set to remain central to its flagship strategy.
Design May See Subtle Changes
At first glance, the iPhone 18 Pro Max may not look drastically different from its predecessors. Apple is expected to retain the triple rear camera setup housed in a raised module, though refinements in finish and materials are likely.
One of the more unusual leaks suggests a slightly transparent design element around the MagSafe charging area, though its final implementation remains unclear. Apple is also said to be working on a more seamless rear panel where the glass blends more smoothly with the frame.
On the front, the design could see more noticeable changes. Some reports claim Apple is testing a hole-punch cutout placed at the top-left corner, potentially replacing the Dynamic Island. However, other sources suggest the company may simply reduce the size of the existing cutout, indicating that the final design is yet to be confirmed.
The device could also become slightly thicker, possibly to accommodate a larger battery. This may push the weight beyond 240 grams, making it the heaviest iPhone to date. New colour options, including deep purple, burgundy and coffee-inspired shades, are also being tested.
Display And Face ID Still In Flux
The display size is expected to remain at 6.9 inches, similar to current Pro Max models. However, Apple is reportedly experimenting with under-display Face ID technology, which could hide sensors beneath the screen for a cleaner look.
While this would mark a significant shift in design, there is no clarity on whether the feature will be ready in time for launch. Some reports suggest Apple may delay the technology and instead opt for a smaller Dynamic Island.
The company is also said to be working on reducing the size of the front camera hardware, which could help minimise any visible cutout regardless of the final design choice.
Camera, Performance And Price Expectations
The iPhone 18 Pro Max is likely to see one of its biggest upgrades in the camera department. Leaks suggest the addition of a variable aperture on the main sensor, allowing better control over light intake and improved depth effects.
Both the main and telephoto cameras could feature wider apertures, enhancing low-light photography. Apple may also adopt a new three-layer stacked sensor, potentially improving image quality, dynamic range and noise reduction.
Under the hood, the device is expected to run on Apple’s next-generation A20 chip, reportedly built on a 2nm process. This could deliver improved performance and efficiency, along with better battery management. The phone may pack a battery of around 5,100mAh.
Connectivity upgrades are also anticipated, with the inclusion of Apple’s C2 modem, which could support faster 5G speeds.
On pricing, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to remain firmly in the premium segment. With rising production costs, particularly due to advanced chip manufacturing, the device could see a price increase. For reference, the iPhone 17 Pro Max launched in India at Rs 1,49,900, and its successor is likely to be priced at or above this level.
While these details are based on early leaks, a clearer picture is expected to emerge closer to the official launch.
