The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has named Shalimar Bagh MLA Rekha Gupta as the Chief Minister of Delhi. Gupta assumed the role of Chief Minister on Thursday after the BJP won 48 seats out of 70 during the recent Assembly elections which brought the party back to power in the national capital after 26 years. The Delhi Chief Minister’s position will go to Rekha Gupta making her the fourth woman to hold the office after Sushma Swaraj (BJP), Sheila Dikshit (Congress), and Atishi (AAP).
The legislative meeting held on Wednesday selected Gupta to serve as the Chief Minister while several other BJP leaders also competed for the role. Through her political career, she progressed by serving as a three-time Municipal Councillor and also leading the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) organisation in the BJP. Many expressed surprise at Gupta’s selection because she had faced competition from notable BJP leaders such as Parvesh Sahib Singh and Vijender Gupta.
Rekha Gupta’s Successful Win of Shalimar Bagh Seat
Rekha Gupta achieved an outstanding victory as the Shalimar Bagh constituency’s elected representative. Gupta secured victory over Bandana Kumari of AAP in an enormous 29,595-vote margin which overcame her previous defeats in 2015 and 2020 for the Shalimar Bagh seat. Her successful electoral victories together with her years of political experience qualified her for Chief Minister of Delhi. Her demonstrated leadership excellence together with persistent party dedication allowed her to gain complete trust from the BJP’s highest leadership members.
Personal Information
Gupta was born in Haryana in 1974 and relocated to Delhi with her family when she turned two years old. She took part in student politics during her studies at Delhi University until she won the president’s position of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) in 1996. Through her membership at the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and her student activism, she entered the public domain.
Rakha Gupta’s Political Career

During her initial political period, Gupta took responsibility as the National Secretary of the BJYM alongside serving as General Secretary of the Delhi BJP Women’s Wing. Gupta earned a seat as the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Councillor and later took the position of President for the Women’s Welfare and Child Development Committee.
Gupta expressed her gratitude when she received the Chief Minister position and declared that her dedication to serving with integrity for the benefit of each citizen throughout Delhi. The swearing-in ceremony will take place at Ramlila Maidan on February 20 and Prime Minister Narendra Modi together with leading BJP officials are expected to be present.
