India and Ghana Sign MoUs to Boost Scientific, Agricultural Ties

The CSR Journal Magazine

India and Ghana have recently exchanged two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at enhancing cooperation in scientific research and agriculture. This formal exchange took place during External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s visit to Ghana on October 7, 2026. Jaishankar was accompanied by Ghana’s Foreign Minister Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa as they sought to bolster their South-South cooperation.

The agreements involve collaboration between the Zoological Survey of India and the University of Ghana, focusing on academic initiatives and scientific research. Another MoU outlines cooperation between the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, based in New Delhi, and Ghana’s CSIR-Crops Research Institute. This latter agreement targets improvements in agricultural research and education.

Jaishankar confirmed the details of the agreements in a post on social media, expressing optimism about this collaboration. He emphasised that the MoUs are part of the broader agenda to enhance ties between India and Ghana and to further engage in South-South cooperation.

Strategic Discussions Between Indian And Ghanaian Officials

Following the MoU exchange, Jaishankar and Ablakwa engaged in extensive discussions that centred around reinforcing the Comprehensive Partnership between their nations. Jaishankar mentioned that the two countries, as partners in the Global South, share mutual aspirations for development and a legacy of solidarity.

The discussions included multiple topics such as trade, investments, defence, technology, and the enhancement of people-to-people ties. Both ministers expressed a commitment to advancing multilateral cooperation, which includes deepening India’s engagement with regional organisations like the African Union and ECOWAS.

Jaishankar acknowledged the significance of these dialogues in strengthening the overall relationship between India and Ghana. This collaborative framework is expected to foster initiatives that address global challenges, including economic growth and social development.

Meetings With Ghanaian Leadership and Broader Agenda

Earlier in his visit, Jaishankar met with Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama. Their discussions focused on the momentum gained in India-Ghana relations following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s significant visit to Ghana the previous year. Jaishankar conveyed greetings from both Indian President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Modi during this interaction.

Jaishankar expressed appreciation for Mahama’s vision for Ghana’s development and his commitment to deepening bilateral relations. He highlighted that the discussions underscored the growing partnership that both nations have been cultivating through various sectors.

Jaishankar’s visit to Ghana is part of a broader itinerary that includes Côte d’Ivoire and Ethiopia, running from October 6 to October 10, 2023. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) indicated that the agenda includes bilateral meetings with leaders from all three nations, aimed at reviewing and enhancing friendly ties.

During the trip, discussions will cover various sectors, encompassing trade, economic relations, and developmental cooperation. The visit reaffirms India’s commitment to strengthening its partnerships across Africa and furthering its association with the Global South.
