Aditya Sharma’s Father Appeals to PM Modi to Prioritize Indian Seafarer Safety Amid Maritime Threats

The CSR Journal Magazine

Rajesh Sharma, the father of late seafarer Aditya Sharma, has made a public appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to prioritise the safety of Indian seafarers in international waters. This comes after an intense situation regarding maritime safety following a meeting between Prime Minister Modi and US President Donald Trump at the G7 Summit. In his comments, Rajesh Sharma recognised the diplomatic challenges faced by the Prime Minister in raising the issue of seafarer security.

While expressing gratitude for the Prime Minister’s efforts, Sharma stressed the need for heightened protections for Indian sailors. “The Prime Minister might be bound due to his diplomatic responsibilities,” he stated, underscoring his concerns regarding the vulnerability of those working in the maritime sector.

Prime Minister’s Push for Greater Protections

During the G7 meeting, PM Modi addressed President Trump concerning the increasing threats faced by maritime workers amidst escalating regional tensions. Modi highlighted the tragic loss of several Indian civilians in recent maritime incidents, reiterating that ensuring the safety of seafarers is a collective responsibility. His statements were made during discussions centred on “Forging New Partnerships and Rebuilding International Solidarity.”

The Prime Minister emphasised that the safety of civilians should not be compromised amid geopolitical conflicts. “We must ensure that sea routes remain secure,” he stated, calling for a collaborative approach to safeguard those involved in maritime trade. This initiative aims to prevent future casualties and protect individuals engaged in essential global commerce.

Modi’s address reinforced the broader principle that civilian maritime workers should remain unharmed by military actions and geopolitical disputes, stressing the importance of secure navigation for international trade.

Reactions to Maritime Incident

The meeting between Modi and Trump took place against the backdrop of a distressing incident in the Gulf of Oman, where three Indian seafarers tragically lost their lives due to a US military strike on a commercial tanker named MT Settebello. The vessel reportedly came under fire after accusations that it had violated a naval blockade related to Iranian ports. Out of the 24 Indian crew members aboard, 21 were successfully rescued, while the remaining three were confirmed deceased.

In light of the incident, President Trump offered a brief acknowledgment of the risks associated with the maritime profession. He noted the inherent dangers faced by workers in this industry, stating, “I heard about that. It’s a rough profession, and we work together on it.” Although he did not expand on the topic extensively, his remarks indicated an awareness of the complexities involved in maritime operations.

The loss of lives in such incidents signals the urgent need for governments to formulate and enforce measures that enhance the security of seafarers globally. As countries navigate diplomatic terrains, the safety of maritime workers should remain a priority within international discourse.
