Abhishek Sharma Shatters Records with Fastest Fifty in T20 World Cup Final

The CSR Journal Magazine

On March 8, 2026, Indian cricketer Abhishek Sharma made a remarkable return to form during the ICC T20 World Cup final held at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium. Amidst a challenging tournament where he struggled, including facing three consecutive scoreless outings and battling food poisoning, Sharma chose the most significant stage to unleash a record-breaking performance. He achieved the fastest fifty in T20 World Cup knockout history, reaching the milestone in just 18 balls.

Prior to this high-stakes match, Abhishek’s only notable contribution came in a game against Zimbabwe during the Super Eights, where he scored a half-century. His journey to the final was marked by struggles as he sought to regain his footing after a disappointing series of innings. However, in the final against New Zealand, his aggressive approach against the pace attack quickly turned the tide of the match.

In the early overs, Sharma targeted New Zealand’s Jacob Duffy, hitting him for two consecutive boundaries. He continued his aggressive display against Lockie Ferguson, scoring a six and a four in quick succession. Following a six over long-off against Matt Henry, Sharma concluded the powerplay with an explosive assault on Duffy, smashing three fours and a six. His innings culminated in a phenomenal 21-ball 52, boasting a striking strike rate of 247.62.

This record-breaking half-century surpassed the previous record of 19 balls set by Finn Allen in the semifinal against South Africa in Kolkata. Throughout the tournament, Abhishek accumulated a total of 141 runs across eight innings, maintaining an average of 17.62 and a strike rate exceeding 158, which included two half-centuries.

Sharma, alongside teammate Sanju Samson, constructed a vital partnership during the powerplay, amassing 92 runs without losing a wicket. This score is now recorded as the highest for the powerplay phase in T20 World Cup history. They also inflicted significant damage on bowler Lockie Ferguson, accumulating 24 runs in one over, which included a six and a four each and three extras due to wides.

This performance earned Sharma a place in the elite company of players with the most expensive overs in T20 World Cup finals, a distinction shared with Ben Stokes and Axar Patel. New Zealand’s eight wides during their bowling innings marked the joint highest by any Full Member country in the Powerplay period. Additionally, India’s achievement of finishing the first four overs with a team fifty in just four overs stands as the fastest in the history of T20 World Cup semifinals or finals.

The pairing of Sharma and Samson also set a landmark by recording the first-ever fifty-run opening partnership in the final of the men’s T20 World Cup, eclipsing the previous high of 48 runs made by Kamran Akmal and Shahzaib Hasan in the 2009 final against Sri Lanka at Lord’s. In the final held on March 8, 2026, New Zealand won the toss and opted to field first against India.

The Indian playing XI featured Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (w), Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav (c), Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Varun Chakaravarthy, Arshdeep Singh, and Jasprit Bumrah. New Zealand’s lineup included Tim Seifert (w), Finn Allen, Rachin Ravindra, Glenn Phillips, Mark Chapman, Daryl Mitchell, James Neesham, Mitchell Santner (c), Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson, and Jacob Duffy.
