Anil Kumble Compares Abhishek Sharma to Virender Sehwag Ahead of IPL 2026

The CSR Journal Magazine

Former Indian cricket captain Anil Kumble has drawn parallels between Abhishek Sharma’s batting approach and that of legendary opener Virender Sehwag as the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 approaches. Kumble highlighted Sharma’s performance over the past two seasons, during which he scored over 400 runs while representing Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) with an impressive strike rate of around 200. In statements made to JioStar, Kumble observed, “I would relate him to someone like Virender Sehwag because he aims to strike hard at every ball.” He expressed that while Sehwag adapted to different formats of the game by pacing his innings, he maintained a strike rate of 140-150 even in limited-overs cricket.

Expectations for Abhishek Sharma

Kumble urged Sharma to refine his thinking regarding strike rate as he continues to develop his game. He stated, “Abhishek should ponder whether he should increase his strike rate from 200 to 300, but it’s crucial to play a sufficient number of balls.” He emphasized that if Sharma bats for 20 balls, he is likely to be close to scoring 50 runs. Kumble referenced the example of Sanju Samson, who has also faced challenges in converting starts into substantial scores but has managed to capitalize on opportunities effectively. Kumble expressed hope that this season would reveal a more mature version of Sharma, which his team, SRH, undoubtedly anticipates.

Potential for Greatness

Kumble elaborated on what distinguishes a good player from a great one, affirming that Sharma possess the qualities necessary for greatness. “If you evaluate his brief international career, he has already ascended to the position of the number one T20 international player. He exerts pressure on bowlers but maintaining that aggressive style consistently can be challenging,” he explained. Kumble pointed out that Sharma has benefited from playing in a team dynamic that allows him to thrive, given the presence of other capable batters who can share the load, thereby preventing potential setbacks.

Adjustments in Sharma’s Game

Commenting on Sharma’s previous struggles against off-spin bowling, Kumble noted that the player has made adjustments particular to this aspect of his game. He referenced Sharma’s experiences in the World Cup, where he struggled against off-spinners but managed to secure a fifty in the final match. Kumble stressed that for a player to transition from being good to great, it is essential to recognize not only one’s strengths but also to control one’s impulses and decisions while batting, which he considers a critical mental adjustment.
