Abhishek Sharma Shines as India Dominates New Zealand in T20 World Cup Final

The CSR Journal Magazine

Gautam Gambhir and his coaching staff expressed immense pride following Abhishek Sharma’s outstanding performance at the Narendra Modi Stadium during the final of the men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The young opener significantly impacted the match, scoring 52 runs off just 21 deliveries, striking three sixes and six fours throughout his innings.

This marked a remarkable turnaround for Abhishek, who had faced challenges earlier in the tournament, with a solitary fifty against Zimbabwe in a Super 8 match being his only notable score. In the semifinal against England, he managed a mere nine runs, raising concerns about his form.

Cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar even suggested considering a change in the lineup, indicating the scrutiny surrounding Abhishek’s performance. Despite the pressure, India’s management opted to retain both Abhishek and bowler Varun Chakravarthy, showcasing their faith in the players.

Early Caution Transforms into Aggressive Play

Abhishek’s performance in the final did not come without preparation, as he was seen practicing late into the evening before the match. Initially, he and fellow opener Sanju Samson approached the game cautiously, accumulating only 12 runs in the first two overs. However, the dynamic changed when Abhishek attacked New Zealand’s Jacob Duffy, hitting a boundary over mid-on. Abhishek seemed to gain confidence, smashing the next delivery straight down the ground. This was followed by Samson’s boundary on the last ball of the over, setting a different tone for the innings. Abhishek was not at his fluent best but displayed his striking capability, particularly enjoying the pace from Lockie Ferguson, where he managed to score 24 runs in the bowler’s first over.

Strategic Oversight from New Zealand

The New Zealand team’s decision to bench off-spinner Cole McConchie proved questionable, as the bowler had effectively dismissed left-handers in previous encounters. Mitchell Santner, New Zealand’s captain, also failed to utilize Glenn Phillips, which allowed Abhishek to take control of the matches’ momentum.

Responding to their decisions, Abhishek hit hard against New Zealand’s attack, culminating in a remarkable first five overs where he reached 31 runs from 13 balls. He accelerated further, dominating Jacob Duffy and reaching his fifty in just 18 balls. After making significant contributions, his innings came to an end when Ravindra’s delivery was caught by Tim Seifert, which swung the momentum in New Zealand’s favor.

Partnerships Propel India Past 250

The Indian innings continued to flourish even after the loss of Abhishek. Ishan Kishan joined forces with Samson, leading to a swift partnership that amassed 105 runs for the second wicket in only eight overs. Despite initial pressure from Santner, Samson broke free, scoring 50 runs off 33 balls, while maintaining a rapid scoring rate.

The momentum surged as Samson showcased excellent timing and strength, hitting three consecutive sixes against Ravindra while India reached a daunting 203 for one in 15 overs. With Samson on the brink of a hundred, he was dismissed for 97 by a full toss from James Neesham, setting a new record for the most sixes in a T20 World Cup.

Final Flourish from India’s Batting Line-Up

Needing to regroup after a string of quick wickets, Hardik Pandya struggled to find rhythm amidst the pressure but managed to score 18 runs. In a spectacular finish, Shivam Dube’s explosive hitting in the final over resulted in a harvest of 24 runs from the last six balls. India concluded their innings at a record total of 255 for four, marking the highest score ever in a men’s T20 World Cup final, showcasing their dominance against New Zealand.
