Abhishek Banerjee chosen as Lok Sabha party leader, given baton of Trinamool Congress’ national leadership

In a significant rise, Abhishek Banerjee, the All India General Secretary and second-in-command of All India Trinamool Congress has been made the Lok Sabha leader of the party in place of veteran leader Sudip Banerjee.

After just 15 minutes of virtual meeting between party supremo Mamata Banerjee and all MPs of Trinamool Congress on Monday, it was decided Sudip Banerjee will be replaced by Mamata’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee.

On the other hand, another veteran TMC leader Kalyan Banerjee also resigned from party chief whip post as Mamata Banerjee expressed her anger on Lok Sabha party performance in recent days. However, party did not accept his resignation. According to Kalyan Banerjee, Abhishek Banerjee called him and asked to wait for few days.

Rise of Abhishek

After Mamata Banerjee became the Chief Minister of West Bengal in 2011, Sudip Banerjee became the Parliamentary party leader of TMC. He was removed from the post after 14 long years.

Abhishek Banerjee, nephew of Mamata Banerjee was elected as MP from Diamond Harbour in 2014 first time. After landslide victory of the party in 2021 assembly election, he was made ALL India General Secretary of the party. Gradually he also became second man in the party and in recent times, he is taking major decisions of the party organisation along with Mamata Banerjee.

Abhishek – The face of new generation

Abhishek Banerjee who is the new face of Trinamool congress and popular among the youth section of the party.

Earlier also Abhishek Banerjee openly questioned for replacing veteran leaders by youth faces on several occasions. A senior leader of TMC said, “Before 2024 Lok Sabha election Abhishek Banerjee asked to replace two veteran leaders Sudip Banerjee and Sougata Roy but our senior leaders including Mamata Banerjee was not ready to replace. Revolting against Sudip Banerjee our another leader Tapas Roy resigned. Even after that, Sudip da was not removed. Now Mamata Banerjee basically was forced to replace Sudip Banerjee which gave Abhishek Banerjee a greater opportunity to project himself in the national platform.”

He also added, “In today’s meeting Sudip da said he is doing well now and if didi wants, he can go Delhi on Tuesday. But, didi said, no need, Abhishek will take charge as Lok Sabha leader. He will also choose party’s speakers on different issues. Sudip the should the rest.”
