Abhijeet Dipke, founder of the Cockroach Janta Party, has declared a “Jail Bharo Andolan” scheduled to commence at Shivaji Park in Mumbai on October 2, coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti. During his visit to Mumbai, Dipke stated that the movement aims to address concerns regarding the functioning of the Election Commission, which he claimed is not aligned with national interests. He called for all political parties to participate in the protest as a unified front against what he termed the “dictatorship” of the Election Commission.

Concerns Over Electoral Process

Dipke alleged that urgent collective action is necessary to instigate changes in the electoral landscape of the country. He echoed statements made by Sharad Pawar, the leader of the Nationalist Congress Party, regarding the suspected misuse of artificial intelligence in elections. Dipke asserted that a unified effort is required to tackle the various issues plaguing the electoral process.

The proposed ‘Jail Bharo Andolan’ comes amid rising tensions from opposition parties aimed at drawing attention to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. This movement has coincided with demands for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Dipke’s call for solidarity among political parties indicates a growing discontent regarding the administration of elections in India.

On September 26, leaders from various parties, including Maharashtra Navnirman Sena’s Raj Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray of the UBT Sena, convened a joint press conference to announce their scheduled protest march. They plan to demonstrate against the Election Commission’s activities on October 4, commencing from Byculla and rallying towards the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) headquarters.

Support from Other Political Leaders

Raj Thackeray emphasised that this will be a coordinated effort against the Election Commission’s actions, urging other political entities to join the cause. He pointed out that his party has raised concerns regarding Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and the Election Commission’s activities for several years without any resolution being reached. Thackeray highlighted the ongoing issues that have persisted despite the regular questioning of the electoral system.

Further solidifying the alliance, Thackeray offered full support to Dipke’s forthcoming ‘Jail Bharo Andolan’, marking a growing coalition among opposition parties. His comments reflect the critical atmosphere surrounding the electoral process, with multiple parties aligning in their demands for accountability from the Election Commission.

The collaboration among these political factions showcases an increasing urgency to address perceived flaws within the electoral framework. With the proposed protests and the ‘Jail Bharo Andolan’ on the horizon, there appears to be a significant push to galvanise public support and media attention regarding electoral reforms and governance.
