Maharashtra Leads The IGBC Registered Green Buildings List in India
With 1,124 green buildings registered with Indian Green Building Congress (IGBC), Maharashtra ranks first in the Indian states’ list. The significant contribution by the state take India’s registered green building foot-print to 3.86 billion square feet, the second best globally after the United States.
The recent data on state-wise green buildings released by IGBC, part of CII, shows that Maharashtra is followed by Tamil Nadu (355), Karnataka (354), Uttar Pradesh (351), Telangana (253), Delhi (197) and Haryana (194).
With the 4.85 billion square feet of green building foot-print across the country, India has managed CO2 reduction by 50 Million Tons, ensured energy saving worth 50,000 Giga Watt/Hours and water savings to 170 Giga Litres.
Dr Prem C Jain, Chairman, Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) said, “Over 3,800 green building projects are currently registered with IGBC, amounting to over 4.45 billion sq.ft of green building footprint. Today, India stands second in the world in terms of largest registered green building footprint. IGBC’s vision is to facilitate 10 billion sq.ft of green building footprint by 2022.”
Further, Maharashtra also notified that upcoming government buildings in Maharshtra will adopt green buildings. “The need of the hour is to create a Policy framework, which will further accelerate the adoption of green buildings. PWD has notified that upcoming government buildings in Maharashtra will adopt IGBC Green Building Standards. Going forward, existing buildings in the State will be retrofitted to become green buildings,” Ashish Kumar Singh, IAS, Principal Secretary, Public Works Department, Government of Maharashtra said at the 14th edition of Green Building Congress 2016. The three-day programme was held in Mumbai with discussions and exhibitions relating to green and sustainable buildings and products.
During the event, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to incorporate IGBC’s Green MRTS Rating System for metro design and construction. IGBC will support DMRC by providing soft & technical support, associated and aligned with IGBC Green Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) for designing metro rail systems of DMRC.
Ar Tai Lee Siang, Chair, World Green Building Council said that, “India has made its mark as the leader in the global green building movement and it should play an important role in taking forward the global green building movement. By 2050, 100% buildings should be net zero,” he underlined.
Union Minister of Railways Suresh Prabhu addressed the delegates on the closing day and said, “All the upcoming 100 smart cities would also have smart & green stations.”
Prabhu highlighted the activities and initiatives of Indian Railways, aimed at conserving resources like restoration of water bodies, energy management, use of LED lights, promoting green toilets and planting of trees along the track.
He underlined the need of green buildings said it should turn into a mass movement and every building should be a green building.
India’s first cosmonaut, Wg Cdr (Retd) Rakesh Sharma present at the event said that non-renewable sources are rapidly depleting to sustain affluent lifestyles asserting that planet earth cannot support non-sustainable developments.
Elaborating his point, Sharma said, “More disposable income is leading to more purchasing powers and the trend of e-retail was hampering the consumer behavior.”
Warning that green sources are non-renewable, he said pollution travels freely across the globe and environment protection is a common concern.
