Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, has openly acknowledged that artificial intelligence is being developed at an alarming rate, expressing concerns that if progress continues unchecked, it could lead to catastrophic outcomes for humanity. In an exclusive interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, Amodei reflected on the implications of rapid AI advancements, noting that a former employee, Jacob Coxon, had warned that the technology could potentially eradicate humanity by the end of this decade.

Amodei’s stance was affirmative regarding Coxon’s caution, indicating that he shares significant agreement with the concerns raised. He stated, “If we take the right path, then the chance of something going wrong is very low. If we take the wrong paths, then the chance of something going wrong could be even higher than that.”

He underscored that companies should enhance the time allocated for safety research and testing, emphasising that responsible ethics must catch up with fast-evolving technology. This “slowing down,” as he described, aims to ensure that advancements do not outstrip humanity’s ability to manage and understand them.

Providing a solution-oriented framework, Amodei proposed engaging independent third-party evaluators with substantial access rights to AI firms, encouraging them to assess models, training methodologies, and safety practices in real-time. He highlighted that if a slowdown could provide just an additional year or two prior to AI reaching critical capability levels, it would be an opportunity to improve safety and alignment measures substantively.

The urgency of this matter is further amplified by his declaration that AI capabilities have been progressing “drastically faster” lately, in part due to AI’s own ability to enhance its development through recursive self-improvement, which poses significant risks if left unmanaged.
