Indore Food Safety Crackdown Results in Licence Suspensions for HeyDeli Pizza, BigBasket and Social Indore

The CSR Journal Magazine

Three prominent food establishments in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, have had their food licences suspended following inspections revealing significant breaches of food safety and hygiene protocols. This action concerns HeyDeli Pizza, BigBasket, and Social Indore, which reportedly did not implement the necessary improvements or respond adequately to improvement notices issued by the Food Safety Administration.

The order to suspend their licences was enacted on August 31 under Section 32(2) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, alongside Rule 2.1.8(1) of the Food Safety and Standards Rules, 2011. Such measures underline the administration’s commitment to ensuring compliance with food safety regulations.

Inspection Findings at HeyDeli Pizza and BigBasket

During an inspection of Shri Harikrishna Group’s HeyDeli Pizza located at Gemini Mall, Scheme No 54, alarming conditions were uncovered. Inspectors found cockroaches in the kitchen, rusty utensils in use, and food being prepared in burnt oil. Cleanliness standards were reportedly inadequate, with open dustbins present and a lack of pest control records. Following this, an improvement notice was issued; however, the establishment did not provide a satisfactory response within the required timeframe.

Similarly, Innovative Retail Concepts Private Limited, which operates BigBasket at B-7, Scheme No 54, PU-4 Commercial in Indore, was flagged for serious discrepancies. The inspection revealed improper storage methods, with food items mixed with non-food materials. Additionally, the premises did not possess required medical fitness certificates for employees nor the necessary documentation. An improvement notice was issued, but compliance was found to be lacking as no satisfactory response was recorded post-inspection.

Concerns Raised at Social Indore LLP

At Social Indore LLP, situated at C21 Business Park opposite Radisson Blu Hotel on MR-10, inspectors identified notable issues with food storage practices. Both vegetarian and non-vegetarian items were found stored together in the same deep freezer, violating hygiene regulations. Furthermore, the establishment was unable to present labouratorial testing reports for the water and food products inspected. An improvement notice was subsequently issued, but no satisfactory corrective actions were demonstrated.

As the authorities continued their inspections, the licensing body opted to suspend the food licences for all three establishments immediately. They have been instructed to remove all perishable food items from their facilities and cease business operations throughout the suspension period. The Food Safety Administration has warned that any continuation of food services during this suspension would be considered a breach of the Food Safety and Standards Act.

The investigation reflects a broader commitment by the Food Safety Administration to engage in ongoing inspections and necessary legal action to ensure compliance with food safety standards, thereby promoting public health and safety. Such regulatory actions aim to reinforce the importance of maintaining high food safety and hygiene standards across the industry.
