28 Teams Seal FIFA World Cup Knockout Berths as Title Race Heats Up

The CSR Journal Magazine

The qualification process for the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup has seen the initial teams confirmed for the round of 32. This year’s format includes an expanded tournament featuring 48 teams, thus introducing a new knockout phase that commences with this round. The top two teams from each of the twelve groups, along with the eight best third-placed teams, will advance to the next stage.

The round of 32 will take place from June 28 to July 3, 2026. Each contest will be crucial as teams face elimination in their pursuit of the World Cup trophy. The knockout stage will follow a format that includes the round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, and a playoff for third place, culminating in the finals scheduled for July 19.

For the first time, FIFA has implemented head-to-head records as the primary tie-breaker, replacing goal difference for teams that finish with equal points within the same group. Additional criteria will be used should ties persist, further establishing a clear ranking system.

Teams That Have Secured Knockout Stage Progression

As of now, 28 teams have achieved qualification for the knockout stage. Among the first to secure their places were the co-hosts, who topped Group A following a 1-0 victory over South Korea on June 18. Mexico began strong, defeating South Africa 2-0 in their opening match.

The United States followed suit with a significant 2-0 win over Australia, placing them at the top of Group D. Germany also progressed, overcoming the Ivory Coast 2-1 to reach the knockout stage, a notable achievement following previous disappointments in earlier tournaments.

Argentina moved forward after a convincing 2-0 win against Austria, with captain Lionel Messi making headlines by becoming the World Cup’s all-time leading scorer with 18 goals. France also advanced, defeating Iraq 3-0, with Kylian Mbappe scoring twice. Notably, Norway, Colombia, and Switzerland have secured their spots, demonstrating a diverse array of nations advancing in the tournament.

Teams That Have Been Eliminated From the Tournament

While many teams celebrate their progression, several others face elimination. Haiti, competing in their first World Cup since 1974, was eliminated following defeats to Brazil and Scotland. Turkiye also fell short after a loss to Paraguay, marking another disappointing chapter in their World Cup history.

Tunisia saw their journey cut short after suffering heavy losses to Japan and Sweden. Jordan, another tournament newcomer, was eliminated after losing to Algeria and Austria, while Panama exited following their second defeat to Croatia. Qatar, despite being the host nation, finished last in Group B after a loss to Bosnia and Herzegovina, ending their hopes of advancing.

Czechia, expected to be a strong competitor, could not progress past the group stage despite their efforts, while Curacao and New Zealand faced early exits, with New Zealand’s performance culminating in just one point. Iraq also finished at the bottom of their group, failing to secure any points in the tournament.
