1,500 Pilgrims Rescued Following Landslide on Kedarnath Trek Route

The CSR Journal Magazine

Approximately 1,500 pilgrims who were stranded in the Chirbasa region along the Kedarnath trekking route were successfully evacuated, as reported by officials on Monday. The rescue operation was conducted by joint teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and District Disaster Response Force (DDRF). They managed to escort the stranded individuals to safety at Gaurikund after adverse conditions hindered their progress late on Sunday night.

The Sonprayag police received alerts regarding the situation, indicating that numerous pilgrims were trapped on the opposite side of the route in Chirbasa. This area is located roughly three kilometres beyond Gaurikund. The blockage was caused by a landslide that obstructed the path, making it impossible for the pilgrims to continue their journey.

Upon being notified, a team from the SDRF, led by Sub-Inspector Ashish Dimri, promptly proceeded to the location. Upon their arrival, they discovered significant debris scattered on the road near the Chirbasa helipad, a clear indication of the recent landslide. Concerns were further heightened by ongoing rockfalls from the hillside, which made the environment dangerous for any attempts at passage.

Joint Operation Launches to Ensure Safety

In light of the precarious situation, the SDRF, NDRF, and DDRF coordinated efforts to initiate a rescue operation. Teams of trained personnel meticulously assessed the hazardous terrain and formulated a strategy for the safe passage of those stranded. Their immediate priority was to guide the pilgrims through the landslide-prone area with utmost caution.

Rescue teams were deployed to navigate the perilous zones, assisting the pilgrims as they made their way across the difficult landscape. Despite the challenging conditions, the operation was executed efficiently, ensuring the safe transit of all individuals. Reports have indicated that the rescue teams were successful in moving the pilgrims beyond the danger area and towards Gaurikund, where further transportation arrangements were made.

The Char Dham Yatra, a significant pilgrimage in Uttarakhand, remains suspended for the second consecutive day due to relentless heavy rainfall. Officials have stated that adverse weather conditions have contributed to hazardous trekking conditions in the region. The safety and well-being of pilgrims remain the foremost concern in light of these events.

Weather Conditions Impacting Pilgrimage Activities

Incessant rainfall has greatly affected activities related to the Char Dham Yatra, raising alarms regarding safety measures for those faithful making the pilgrimage. Officials have observed that the heavy rains have led to unstable terrain and increased risks of landslides, prompting the temporary suspension of pilgrim movements. Until conditions improve, authorities are closely monitoring the weather and local conditions.

Efforts continue to mitigate risks associated with the ongoing rainfall, and rescue operations are being reinforced to facilitate the safe return of any remaining pilgrims who could potentially be stranded. Officials urge all individuals engaged in the pilgrimage to remain vigilant and adhere to safety advisories to ensure their protection during this adverse period.

Reports will be updated as the situation progresses, and authorities remain committed to ensuring that safety measures are prioritised for all individuals undertaking the Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand.
