12 Women Join BJP Chief Nitin Nabin’s New Team, Boosting Female Representation

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recently announced team of office-bearers by BJP President Nitin Nabin features a notable presence of women, reflecting the party’s ongoing commitment to enhancing female representation across its organisational hierarchy. The new team comprises 65 members, with 12 women included. This marks a deliberate effort to bolster women’s roles within the party.

Among the 13 Vice Presidents named, six are women, which demonstrates a substantial advancement from previous appointments. Former Union Minister Smriti Irani has been appointed as the General Secretary, a prominent role within the party’s structure. The initiative appears aligned with the BJP’s broader strategy to create greater inclusivity for women at various levels of decision-making.

Notable female Vice Presidents appointed include Vasundhra Raje, a former Chief Minister of Rajasthan, D Purandeswari, previously the Chief of BJP in Andhra Pradesh, and Bharti Pravin Pawar, who served as Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare. They are joined by party leaders Varshaben Narendrabhai Doshi, Rekha Verma, and Dr Madhuchanda Kar.

Increased Roles for Women in BJP Leadership

Vasundhra Raje and Rekha Verma have been retained in their roles as Vice Presidents, indicating continuity alongside new appointments. The national secretaries now include BJP Members of Parliament Kavita Patidar, Phangnon Konyak, and Sangeeta Yadav. Furthermore, BJP MP Roopkumari Choudhary has taken over the Mahil Morcha leadership from Vanathi Srinivasan, showcasing a shift in organisational dynamics.

Preeti Gandhi has also been appointed as co-convenor for social media initiatives, adding to the list of women in key positions. The overall increase in the number of women office-bearers compared to the previous administration underscores the party’s intent to enhance female visibility in leadership roles. Notably, the outgoing team lacked a woman general secretary, thereby highlighting the progress made in the new assembly.

The BJP’s recent activities coincide with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s priorities regarding women’s participation in governance. In his Independence Day address, he acknowledged the crucial contributions of women to the nation’s development. Modi spoke about women’s involvement in technology and the strengthening of the armed forces, as well as the economic empowerment of rural women, emphasising their pivotal role in national progress.

Advocacy for Legislative Reservation for Women

Modi’s speech included a call for enhanced legislative reservations for women in both the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. He noted that the proposed measures, based on delimitation, would increase the number of parliamentary seats designated for women. He expressed his admiration for the achievements of women in various sectors, specifically mentioning their role in advanced manufacturing, such as the production of microchips.

The Prime Minister also set ambitious targets for further female empowerment, aiming to reach 6 crore financially empowered rural women following the successful establishment of three crore Lakhpati Didis. His call to action extended to all political parties, urging them to support the implementation of one-third legislative reservation for women, thereby addressing longstanding disparities in political representation.

The newly appointed BJP office-bearers also exhibit considerable representation from states that will hold elections in the near future, including Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Punjab. This strategic inclusion may assist the party in solidifying its influence in upcoming electoral contests, while simultaneously promoting a diverse leadership reflective of the electorate’s demographics.
