12 US Troops Wounded As Iran Strikes Key American Base In Saudi Arabia

The CSR Journal Magazine

An Iranian missile and drone strike on a key United States military base in Saudi Arabia has wounded American troops and damaged aircraft, marking a sharp escalation in the widening conflict across West Asia.

The attack targeted Prince Sultan Air Base, a critical US facility in the region, and involved both a missile and multiple unmanned aerial systems, according to US officials familiar with the matter.

Troops Wounded, Aircraft Damaged In Strike

Initial reports indicate that at least 12 US service members were wounded in the attack, including two in very serious condition. The strike also caused damage to several US refuelling aircraft stationed at the base, raising concerns about operational readiness.

The incident marks the second attack on the base since the conflict began on February 28. Earlier this month, Army Sergeant Benjamin N Pennington succumbed to injuries sustained in a similar strike, highlighting the growing risks faced by US personnel in the region.

US Central Command has previously stated that more than 300 service members have been wounded since the conflict escalated, underlining the intensity of ongoing hostilities.

US Expands Military Presence In Region

In response to rising tensions, the United States is significantly reinforcing its military presence in the Middle East. The aircraft carriers USS Abraham Lincoln and USS Gerald R Ford are already deployed, with reports suggesting that USS George H W Bush could soon join operations.

Additional forces, including Marines and paratroopers, are being positioned closer to potential conflict zones, signalling preparations for a prolonged military campaign.

The increased deployment reflects Washington’s strategy to maintain operational dominance while deterring further attacks on its assets and personnel.

Diplomatic Signals Amid Escalation

Even as military actions intensify, diplomatic efforts continue alongside the conflict. US President Donald Trump has renewed calls for Saudi Arabia and Israel to normalise relations under the Abraham Accords once the war concludes.

However, Saudi Arabia has reiterated its position that any such agreement must include a credible pathway towards a Palestinian state, indicating that significant hurdles remain.

In a rare diplomatic development, Iran has signalled willingness to facilitate humanitarian aid shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global trade route. The move could ease some international concerns over disruptions to energy and food supplies.

Conflict Spreads Across Multiple Fronts

The broader conflict continues to expand, with fresh Israeli strikes reported on Iranian nuclear-linked facilities in Arak and Yazd. While no casualties or contamination have been confirmed, Iran has warned of a “heavy price” in response.

Meanwhile, cross-border hostilities have intensified across the region. Explosions have been reported in Tel Aviv and Tehran, with casualties confirmed in Israel. Saudi Arabia has intercepted incoming missiles and drones targeting Riyadh, while Kuwait has reported damage to key port infrastructure.

Lebanon has also seen renewed violence, adding to the growing list of countries affected by the conflict.

Global Pressure Mounts For Ceasefire

The escalating violence has prompted increasing global concern, with G7 foreign ministers calling for an immediate halt to attacks on civilians and critical infrastructure.

The war, triggered by US and Israeli strikes on Iran in late February, has already resulted in thousands of deaths, particularly in Iran and Lebanon, and threatens to destabilise the broader region.

Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts behind the scenes, both sides appear to be preparing for a prolonged and potentially more dangerous phase of the conflict, raising fears of further escalation with global consequences.
