‘Working on it’: Priyank Kharge on Assisting Stranded Kannadigas in Dubai

The CSR Journal Magazine

Priyank Kharge, Karnataka’s Minister for Information Technology and Biotechnology, has acknowledged the plight of Karnataka residents stranded in Dubai due to the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel. Kharge confirmed that measures are being taken to ensure their safety and well-being. He stated that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting necessary actions to safeguard all Indians, particularly those from Karnataka.

During an interview, Kharge mentioned that the central government is actively involved in addressing the situation. He indicated that while airspace closures have complicated travel, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has been in contact with the stranded citizens. Those in need of immediate assistance, especially from call centers or the embassy, are being provided with direct contact numbers for help. He stressed that the situation is evolving and remains a work in progress.

Chief Minister’s Urgent Letter to the Prime Minister

In a recent post on X, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed his concerns about the impact of the escalating tensions in the Middle East on Kannadigas and other Indian nationals. He highlighted the importance of heightened diplomatic efforts and preparedness for potential special repatriation flights. The Chief Minister emphasised Karnataka’s readiness to cooperate in ensuring the safe return of its citizens.

Siddaramaiah’s letter to Prime Minister Modi outlined the significant disruption in air travel caused by recent restrictions and Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) issued by various countries across West Asia. These developments have left many individuals stranded, especially in transit hubs like Dubai. His letter underscored the growing uncertainty and concern among affected families in Karnataka and throughout India due to the shifting security dynamics in the region.

Coordination with Central Authorities for Repatriation

The Chief Minister further elaborated that the Office of the Chief Secretary in Karnataka has begun coordinating efforts with the MEA to ensure the safety of Indians overseas. Discussions have taken place regarding repatriation strategies. Additionally, he noted that the Ministry of Civil Aviation has been directed to liaise with airlines for leniency in flight scheduling, penalties, and other support for stranded travelers.

The backdrop to this situation includes recent military actions following the US-Israel strikes against Iran on February 28. In retaliation, Iran conducted drone and missile attacks targeting various Arab nations, resulting in numerous flight cancellations and further complicating the safe return of stranded individuals. As the conflict continues to evolve, the Karnataka government remains committed to ensuring the welfare of its citizens amid these challenging circumstances.
