Woman’s Half-Burnt Body Found in Tripura; Husband Alleges Murder by BJP MLA’s Nephew

The CSR Journal Magazine

A major political controversy has erupted in Tripura’s Gomati district after the half-burnt body of a woman was discovered in Mirza village under Kakaraban police station on Saturday. The victim’s husband alleged that she died by suicide following an assault by individuals allegedly linked to a local BJP MLA. The incident has triggered protests, political backlash, and disciplinary action within the police force.

Husband Alleges Assault by BJP MLA’s Nephew

The victim’s husband claimed that on Friday night, he and his wife were physically assaulted by three individuals, including Manna Majumder, the nephew of BJP’s Kakraban-Salgarh MLA, Jitendra Majumder. He said that when they approached the Kakaraban police station to file a complaint, police allegedly refused to register it.

“Thereafter, we went to the police station to lodge a complaint, but they refused to accept it,” he alleged. “We returned home and went to sleep separately as we often do. This morning, my wife’s half-burnt body was found on a nearby road. Manna Majumder and his two companions are responsible for the death of my wife,” he alleged.

The next morning, his wife’s half-burnt body was found on a roadside near their home.

FIR and Suspension Follow Public Outcry

“Firstly, the police did not register their complaint. What is more disturbing is that the couple was chased by the accused when they were returning from the police station. It seems that the police are trying to shield the accused,” district Congress president Titan Paul alleged.

Initially registered as an unnatural death, the case was later reclassified as abetment to suicide following the husband’s allegations. SDPO Debanjali Ray confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and more charges may be added under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Assistant Sub-Inspector Sanjoy Sarkar of the Kakaraban police station was suspended for alleged negligence in duty.

SDPO of Uadaipur, Debanjali Ray, said the body of the woman was found early in the morning. “Initially, we registered a case of unnatural death. Later, a case of abetment of suicide was registered. We have started an investigation. More sections under the BNS will be added based on information received during the investigation,” she said.

Political Uproar and Protests

The incident has led to political uproar. The Congress party accused the police of shielding the accused, claiming the couple was chased by their attackers after returning from the police station. Congress MLAs Sudip Roy Barman and Birajit Sinha visited the victim’s family and demanded all arrests be made before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to the area on September 22. They warned of taking the issue directly to the PM.

The CPI(M) also staged demonstrations in Agartala and Udaipur, alleging the woman was burnt alive.

Government Promises Strict Action

Chief Minister Manik Saha announced that four accused have been arrested and a detailed inquiry has been ordered. Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy visited the victim’s home and assured the family of an impartial investigation.

In a post on Facebook late on Saturday, Chief Minister Manik Saha said: “A detailed inquiry has been ordered into the Mirza incident. All those involved in this heinous crime will be brought to justice as per the law. In this connection, four accused persons have already been arrested.”
