In a disturbing case of domestic violence, a 28-year-old man was left critically injured after his wife allegedly poured boiling oil and red chilli powder on him while he slept in their home in South Delhi’s Madangir area. The shocking incident occurred around 3:15 AM on October 3, and the victim, Dinesh Kumar, is currently battling for his life in the ICU of Safdarjung Hospital.

Attack During the Night

As per the FIR filed at Ambedkar Nagar Police Station, Dinesh’s wife, Sadhana, carried out the attack while their eight-year-old daughter was also inside the house. The couple had reportedly eaten dinner together earlier that night before going to bed.

Dinesh, a pharmaceutical firm employee, recounted the horrifying moment to police. He said, “My wife and daughter were sleeping nearby. Around 3.15 am, I suddenly felt a sharp, burning pain across my body. I saw my wife standing and pouring boiling oil on my torso and face. Before I could get up or call for help, she sprinkled red chilli powder on my burns,” he alleged in his complaint. When I shouted in pain, she said, ‘Agar shor machaya to aur garam tel daal doongi’ (If you scream, I’ll pour more oil).”

Neighbours Alerted by Screams

Dinesh’s screams alerted neighbours and the landlord’s family, who lived on the floor below. Anjali, the landlord’s daughter, described the chaos that followed. “My father went upstairs to see what was happening. The door was locked. His wife had locked the door from inside. We asked them to open the door. When the door finally opened, we saw him writhing in pain and his wife hiding inside the house.”

Initially, Sadhana claimed she would take Dinesh to the hospital, but Anjali noticed something was off. “She walked in the opposite direction instead of going to the hospital. We got suspicious. My father intervened, stopped her, arranged for an auto, and rushed Dinesh to the hospital himself,” she added.

Dinesh was first taken to Madan Mohan Malviya Hospital but was referred to Safdarjung Hospital due to the severity of the burns on his face, chest, and arms.

History of Marital Discord

The couple had been married for eight years and reportedly had a troubled relationship. Two years ago, Sadhana had filed a complaint with the Crime Against Women (CAW) Cell, but the matter was resolved through a compromise.

Legal Action and Ongoing Probe

Police have booked Sadhana under sections 118 (voluntarily causing hurt using dangerous means), 124 (causing grievous hurt by acid or similar substance), and 326 (causing injury by dangerous weapons or means) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

“His injuries are described as dangerous in the medical report. No arrest has been made yet,” a police officer said.
