The CSR Journal Magazine

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has announced its decision to commemorate several legendary cricketers by naming key areas of the renowned Wankhede Stadium after them. This resolution followed a meeting of the MCA’s Apex Council conducted on Thursday. MCA president Ajinkya Naik revealed that a stand at the Wankhede Stadium will be dedicated to Ravi Shastri, a former captain of the Indian cricket team and head coach, who also captained Mumbai during his domestic playing career.

In addition to Shastri, the MCA will honor former Indian cricketer Eknath Solkar by naming gate number six after him. Gate number three will commemorate the late Dilip Sardesai, while gate number five will be dedicated to Diana Edulji, who held the position of captain for the Indian women’s cricket team. Ajinkya Naik elaborated on the decisions made during the meeting, emphasizing the significance of these tributes to the sport and its contributors.

During the meeting, Naik stated, “We made several important decisions today. The first was to name a stand at Wankhede Stadium after Ravi Shastri, the former captain and coach of Indian cricket. Additionally, Gate No. 3 will be named after the late Dilip Sardesai, and Gate No. 5 will honor Diana Edulji, while Gate No. 6 will be dedicated to the late Eknath Solkar.” He affirmed that this decision came through a consensus among the Apex Council members, reiterating the important contributions of Mumbai’s players to both the local and national cricketing arenas.

The naming honors reflect the MCA’s commitment to recognizing the remarkable legacies of these cricketers who have played pivotal roles in the nation’s cricketing history. The Wankhede Stadium, a historical venue, has witnessed numerous memorable matches and milestones in Indian cricket. By paying tribute to these sports legends, the MCA aims to instill a sense of pride among fans and aspiring cricketers alike.

Meanwhile, the Indian cricket team, which holds the title of defending champions, is set to compete against the West Indies in a crucial ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Super 8 match. This fixture will take place at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on March 1. Currently, both India and the West Indies are tied at two points each in the standings, making this encounter crucial for both teams as the victor will secure a spot in the semi-finals.
