Bollywood actor Varun Dhawan has disclosed that his daughter, Lara, has been diagnosed with Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH), a medical condition that has impacted her ability to walk effectively. During an appearance on the podcast “Be A Man, Yaar!”, Dhawan provided insights into the diagnosis, explaining that it caused an imbalance in her legs, which made walking and running difficult for her. The actor shared that Lara underwent a medical procedure and was required to wear a spica cast for approximately two-and-a-half months.

Dhawan described this period as challenging for the family, particularly noting that his daughter had to be placed under anaesthesia prior to waking up in the cast. He confirmed that the cast has since been removed and that Lara is recovering well.

Understanding Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip

Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH) is a condition where a child’s hip joint does not develop correctly, potentially causing the hip to slip out of its socket. This condition can result in varying leg lengths and challenges in movement if not treated early. Dhawan highlighted the importance of awareness and early diagnosis, pointing out that while some countries provide treatments at birth, timely intervention remains essential for effective management.

Lara’s Treatment and Family Impact

The actor explained that fortunately, Lara did not require surgical intervention, as the doctors managed to correct the condition through a specific procedure. However, the need for her to remain in a spica cast for several weeks was a demanding time for the entire family. Dhawan expressed that the experience was significant enough that he is considering documenting it in more detail, possibly through a book, to assist others in comprehending the condition better.

Raising Awareness Among Parents

Dhawan publicly shared his daughter’s diagnosis to help raise awareness among other parents. He urged them to closely monitor their children’s movements and to consult a paediatrician if they observe any abnormalities. He clarified that his intention in speaking out was not to seek sympathy, but rather to encourage early intervention and foster a better understanding of DDH within the community.

Varun Dhawan, along with his wife Natasha Dalal, welcomed Lara in 2024. The actor has previously reflected on how his role as a father has influenced his life, noting that he has become more emotionally aware since embracing parenthood.
