Uttar Pradesh Police Arrest Two Linked to Social Media Terror Network in Bijnor

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) has apprehended two individuals in Bijnor, marking a significant step in a broader investigation into a terror-linked network allegedly orchestrated through social media by a handler based in West Asia. The arrested men are identified as Uvaid Malik and Jalal Haider, also known as Sameer.

Police acted on intelligence reports to detain these suspects, who are believed to have connections with Aqib, a resident of the Meerut Mawana area currently living in West Asia. This operation reflects the growing concern about radicalisation and recruitment activities utilising digital platforms.

Expansion of Online Radicalisation Efforts

The authorities suggest that the arrests are indicative of a widening online network used for recruitment and radicalisation. Officials mentioned that Aqib has allegedly been in contact with various individuals in India as well as associates in South Africa and Saudi Arabia.

During questioning, the detainees reportedly stated that the handler had been leveraging social media to disseminate extremist content, foster anti-national sentiments, and promote violent actions. The police have further noted attempts to extend this network’s influence across India through persistent digital engagement.

Investigations revealed that the accused had established contact with Aqib and another associate, Maizul, approximately three years ago while they were working in Surat. Authorities believe that this online network has gradually developed into a coordinated group with international connections.

Previous Arrests and Ongoing Investigations

The current case has broadened substantially following earlier arrests made by the ATS. On April 2, four men from Meerut and Gautam Buddh Nagar were detained in relation to the same module, which was initially suspected of plotting an attack on the Lucknow railway station.

Police investigations into the network were reignited due to a viral Instagram video from November 2025 that reportedly showcased Aqib handling an AK-47 rifle and explosives. While the initial inquiry concluded that the weapons in the video were toy replicas, the emergence of new evidence prompted a reopening of the case under the ATS.

As part of the ongoing investigation, disciplinary actions have been initiated against local police officials involved in the earlier closure of the case, including the suspension of the then station house officer and investigating officer, along with the removal of a circle officer from their duties.

Tracking Other Suspects and Possible Links

Aqib is already subject to three lookout circulars, with measures being initiated to cancel the passports of all suspects involved. Additionally, a man named Sameer from Najibabad is also being sought in connection with the investigation.

Authorities have intensified their efforts to trace alleged associates, including Maizul, Aqib, and another accused referred to as Azad. The investigation is focusing on their international connections and digital activities as part of an expansive counter-terrorism initiative.

The comprehensive approach aims to dismantle the network effectively and prevent the spread of radical ideologies through digital platforms within the country.
