Uttar Pradesh Government Takes Action Against Engineers Over Jal Jeevan Mission Lapses

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Uttar Pradesh government has initiated disciplinary action against 26 engineers due to alleged negligence in the execution of the Jal Jeevan Mission. An official statement released on Wednesday highlighted that 12 engineers were suspended as part of these measures. This decision was taken amid concerns regarding the ineffective implementation of the program, which aims to provide tap water to every rural household. Officials characterized this as one of the most significant crackdowns on state water corporation personnel in recent history.

Details of the Engineers Involved

The order for the suspension of the engineers, who hold various positions, was issued by Additional Chief Secretary for Rural Water Supply, Anurag Srivastava. The suspended engineers include: Avinash Gupta from Lakhimpur Kheri, Soumitra Srivastava from Jaunpur, Mohd Qasim Hashmi from Ghazipur, Amit Rajput and Sitaram Yadav from Chandauli, Akbar Hasan from Bijnor, Anurag Goyal from Auraiya, Kuldeep Kumar Singh from Hathras, Rajendra Kumar Yadav from Azamgarh, Roop Chandra from Bareilly, Avneesh Pratap Singh from Barabanki, and Dharm Prakash Maheshwari from Kushinagar.

Further Actions and Transfers

In addition to the suspensions, the government has directed departmental inquiries against four engineers for their performance. Show-cause notices have been given to three other engineers who exhibited slow progress in their assigned tasks. Complaints related to various schemes have also led to the transfer of seven engineers. Srivastava emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring the efficient delivery of tap water to rural households and warned that negligence will not be tolerated.

Context of the Recent Actions

This recent action comes in light of a controversy that unfolded on January 30, when Jal Shakti Minister Swatantra Dev Singh’s convoy was halted by BJP MLA Brijbhushan Rajput in Charkhari, Mahoba. The interruption was due to complaints regarding the poor condition of roads following pipeline installation work associated with the Jal Jeevan Mission. This incident resulted in a notable exchange between the minister and the MLA, attracting considerable attention within the ruling party as well.
