Trump Waives Tariffs on Major Russian Oil and Gas Importers as Part of New Sanctions Against Moscow

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent decision by US President Donald Trump to waive tariffs of up to 100 per cent on goods imported from the five largest purchasers of Russian oil and gas has been reported. This move is part of a broader set of sanctions aimed at Moscow, as outlined in a new legislative measure. Trump cited the national interest of the United States as the rationale behind this decision.

In addition to the tariff waiver, various other global developments have emerged, including the safe return of nine Indian seafarers to Romania after their vessel was reportedly struck by a drone. The Indian mission in Bucharest confirmed that all crew members were unharmed.

Protests have also been reported in London, where Indian groups gathered at Mahatma Gandhi’s statue in Parliament Square. Organised by the Opposition Congress and UK-based Indian student organisations, the demonstration was aimed at voicing concerns over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and actions taken by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. A counter-protest was held by supporters of the Indian government.

In India, a report from a UN human rights expert regarding a “satirical political movement” among youth was dismissed by New Delhi as mere hearsay. The Indian government urged the expert to verify claims before making public statements that could misrepresent the situation.

Additionally, six Democratic lawmakers in the United States, including Pramila Jayapal and Ilhan Omar, have called on Secretary of State Marco Rubio to address the alleged excessive use of force during student protests in Delhi and other regions. These protests were described in the report as CJP protests.

Incidents in Bangladesh and Pakistan

A tragic incident occurred in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar district, where at least ten individuals, including six family members, lost their lives in a fire at a seaside resort. Local media and officials have reported several injuries resulting from this disaster.

In a separate development, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa emphasised the need for enhanced cooperation with India during the inauguration of a significant expansion of a zinc mine operated by an Indian conglomerate in the Northern Cape province. He highlighted the historical ties and shared democratic values between India and South Africa.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Opposition leader, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, expressed concerns regarding the increasing concentration of power within the military establishment. He warned that an imbalance among state institutions could jeopardise the country’s stability.

On another note, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck Pakistan’s Balochistan province, as reported by the Pakistan Meteorological Department. This incident adds to the series of emergencies and political statements emerging from the region.

In Bangladesh, the celebration of Durga Puja took place under strict security measures. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir extended greetings to the Hindu community, emphasising the importance of communal harmony and equal rights for all faiths.
