Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Transforms Living Conditions and Empowers Woman in Bundelkhand

The CSR Journal Magazine

For nearly forty years, 57-year-old Babita Khateek endured the challenges of living in a dilapidated kutcha house in Govind Nagar, Lalitpur district, Uttar Pradesh. Her home, characterised by a leaking roof and crumbling walls, posed constant threats, particularly during the monsoon season when rainwater would seep in, creating an uncomfortable living environment. The family, which included five children, faced the added anxiety of potential collapse or the intrusion of poisonous creatures.

Babita and her husband, Harprasad Khateek, relied on goat rearing for their livelihood, but their income was insufficient to cover daily expenses. Despite their hardships, Babita held onto the hope of one day securing a permanent home. This opportunity presented itself in 2019 when she applied for assistance under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), alongside other women in her community.

Upon approval of her application, Babita received Rs 2.5 lakh in financial aid, which, combined with her family’s savings, enabled her to construct a new house. The completion of this home marked a significant turning point in her life, ending years of struggle and uncertainty.

Enhanced Living Conditions and Personal Empowerment

The new home provided immediate relief from the difficulties that had plagued Babita’s family. The security of a permanent structure replaced the fears associated with their previous living conditions. However, the transformation extended beyond mere physical comfort. Babita reported that owning a house significantly boosted her confidence and dignity within her family.

With a secure home, she began to take a more active role in household decisions, feeling that her opinions were now valued. “My respect, dignity and self-confidence have increased,” she noted, highlighting the newfound importance of her voice in family matters. The house also became a venue for significant family events, including the weddings of her daughter and two sons, fostering a sense of togetherness.

Babita’s family, now including her four sons and their spouses, has benefited from the stability that a permanent home provides. For a woman who once worried about her children’s safety, the ability to accommodate a growing family in a secure environment represents a remarkable achievement.

Significance of Housing Assistance and Future Prospects

A memorable moment for Babita was her interaction with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a video call when she received the keys to her new house. The Prime Minister inquired about her educational background and whether she had access to a cooking gas connection, which she confirmed. This interaction left Babita feeling recognised and motivated, marking a significant milestone in her journey.

Babita’s experience underscores the broader implications of housing security for women in economically disadvantaged communities. The financial assistance provided under PMAY has not only transformed her living conditions but has also empowered her to engage more actively in family life. She expressed hope that similar support would continue to reach others in need.

As her family continues to grow, the importance of secure housing remains paramount. One of Babita’s daughters-in-law has also benefited from PMAY, enabling the construction of an additional house nearby. This arrangement allows the extended family to remain close while addressing their housing needs, illustrating the lasting impact of the housing scheme on future generations.
