US Says Tanker Passage Through Hormuz Due To Ongoing Talks With Iran

The CSR Journal Magazine

The White House announced on Monday that the recent passage of oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz is linked to ongoing negotiations between the United States and Iran. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated in a press briefing that these developments are a direct result of diplomatic efforts championed by President Donald Trump. She dismissed any suggestions that Iran is selectively allowing certain ships to navigate through the strait or exerting informal control over maritime activities.

Leavitt emphasized, “That’s not something we support, and I would reject that they are cherry-picking.” She detailed that the recent movement involves ten previously announced tankers and an additional twenty that are expected in the coming days. According to her, these outcomes stem from sustained talks between the US and Iran.

Trump’s Remarks on Tanker Movement

On the previous day, President Trump remarked that Iran has allowed twenty oil tankers to traverse the Strait of Hormuz as a gesture of respect. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, he noted that Iran initially consented to the passage of ten vessels and subsequently increased that number by another ten, which he viewed as a favorable development. “We have emissaries, but we are also dealing directly,” Trump stated. He mentioned that Iran agreed to send eight boats two days prior, followed by the additional two, totaling ten. “And now today, they gave us, as a tribute, I don’t know, I can’t define it exactly, but they gave us, I think, out of a sign of respect, 20 boats of oil, big, big boats of oil going through the Hormuz Strait,” he added.

Clarifications on Vessel Restrictions

During the briefing, Leavitt was questioned about whether the administration supported any system whereby Iran could impose tolls or restrictions on vessels traversing the strategic waterway. She made it clear that such an arrangement is not endorsed by the American government. Her remarks come in response to a report from the Shipping News website, Lloyd’s List, which suggested that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has established a form of ‘toll booth’ in the Strait of Hormuz amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia. According to the report, vessels are now required to present full documentation, acquire clearance codes, and accept IRGC-escorted passage through a controlled corridor.

Importance of the Strait of Hormuz

The Strait of Hormuz holds significant importance as a global energy passage. Recent developments occur in the face of elevated tensions in the region, yet diplomatic communication between Washington and Tehran remains open. The situation underscores the ongoing complexities of international maritime security and geopolitical relations in the Persian Gulf.
