US Military Dismantles Iranian Mine-laying Vessels to Secure Hormuz Strait

The CSR Journal Magazine

As tensions continue in West Asia and the Gulf region, General Dan Caine, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, announced that the United States has successfully destroyed 44 Iranian mine-laying vessels. This action aims to disrupt Iran’s ability to mine the Strait of Hormuz. General Caine emphasised the ongoing military efforts by US Central Command (CENTCOM) to achieve operational objectives by targeting various Iranian assets.

During a briefing at the Pentagon, General Caine highlighted that the United States remains committed to targeting mine storage facilities and naval ammunition depots. He stated, “We continue to hunt and eliminate afloat assets, including more than 120 vessels and 44 mine layers. Our pressure on these targets will persist.” He also mentioned the deployment of the A-10 Warthog and AH-64 Apache helicopters to engage Iranian naval vessels in the strategic waterway. The A-10 Warthog has been described as effective in providing close air support since its introduction in the 1970s.

Capabilities of Military Assets

The A-10 Warthog is equipped with a powerful 30mm chain gun capable of firing around 4,200 rounds per minute, facilitating its role in close engagement with enemy forces while providing support to US troops. In conjunction with the A-10, AH-64 Apache helicopters are actively involved in operations along the southern flank of the Strait of Hormuz, targeting fast attack vessels.

Status of U.S. Naval Forces

A spokesperson from the U.S. Navy reported that two of its three warships, designed for counter-mine operations in the region and usually based in Bahrain, are currently undergoing scheduled maintenance in a different theater. This has raised concerns among military experts regarding the continuity of naval operations in the area. Reports suggest that US Marines may engage in ground raids targeting missile and drone depots along the Iranian coastline, which pose potential threats to both US and commercial shipping activities.

During a recent press conference, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that the United States remains aligned with its strategic goals in the conflict against Iran. However, he refrained from predicting an end date for the current military engagements, highlighting that any decisions will ultimately reside with President Donald Trump. This ambiguous timeline indicates the ongoing nature of US military operations in the region and reflects the complexities involved in addressing threats emanating from Iran.
