UP Woman Dies as Drunk ‘Doctor’ Performs Surgery After Watching YouTube Tutorial

The CSR Journal Magazine

A shocking incident has come to light from Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki district. The incident has once again highlighted the deadly consequences of unqualified medical practice in rural India.

A 38-year-old woman, Munishra Rawat, died after the owner of an illegal clinic and his nephew allegedly attempted abdominal surgery on her by following a YouTube tutorial. Neither man held medical qualifications, yet the clinic had been operating for years.

Pain Complaint Leads to Misdiagnosis

Munishra, a resident of Saidanpur village under the Kotwali Kothi area, had been suffering from abdominal pain. On 5 December, her husband, Tehbahadur (Fateh Bahadur) Rawat, took her to “Shri Damodar Aushadhalaya,” a clinic run by former village head Gyan Prakash Mishra.

Mishra allegedly claimed her discomfort was caused by “stones” and insisted she needed immediate surgery. He estimated the cost at ₹25,000, and the family deposited ₹20,000 before the procedure began.

‘YouTube Surgery’ Turns Fatal

In his police complaint, Tehbahadur alleged that Mishra was intoxicated during the operation and repeatedly consulted a YouTube video while cutting open his wife’s abdomen. Mishra’s nephew, Vivek Kumar Mishra, who works at an ayurvedic hospital in Raebareli, reportedly assisted in the procedure.

According to the complaint, the incision was made incorrectly, causing severe internal injury and cutting multiple veins. Munishra died the following evening, on 6 December.

Post-Mortem Confirms Botched Surgery

The post-mortem report revealed that instead of treating the suspected issue, possibly appendicitis, the duo had made improper cuts to her abdominal organs, leading to fatal complications. Police stated that the clinic had been operating illegally despite lacking any medical authorization. Authorities have since sealed the establishment.

Public Outrage and Protest

The incident triggered widespread anger in the community. On Monday, hundreds of Bahujan Army members, led by national president Deva Rawat and youth leader Amit Chaudhary, surrounded the Kothi police station demanding strict action. They alleged long-running negligence and corruption that allowed such illegal setups to flourish. Activists stressed that the Dalit community, to which the victim belonged, must receive justice without delay.

Meanwhile, Deva Rawat said, “Wherever there is oppression and persecution against the Dalit community, every Bahujan Army worker will fight.” He also said, “We will work to explain the situation to everyone in whatever language they understand.”

Police Action and Charges

Following rising pressure, Kothi police registered a case against both the clinic operator and his nephew for causing death by negligence. Sections of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, have also been invoked. Police said efforts are underway to arrest the accused. Meanwhile, health officials have initiated an inquiry into how the clinic operated without scrutiny for so long.
