Kieron Pollard Appointed Head Coach of IPL’s Mumbai Indians

The CSR Journal Magazine

Kieron Pollard, the newly appointed head coach of the Mumbai Indians, has acknowledged that the five-time IPL champions have not met the expectations of their supporters in recent seasons. He emphasised that recognising their shortcomings is the first step towards improvement. Pollard, who previously served as the team’s batting coach for four IPL seasons, succeeds Mahela Jayawardene.

He departed from the franchise last week. Pollard has been associated with the Mumbai Indians since IPL 2010, initially joining as a player. During his tenure as a player, Pollard contributed to all five of Mumbai Indians’ IPL title victories in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020. He was also part of the team’s Champions League T20 successes in 2011 and 2013. In a video shared by the MI on social media, Pollard expressed his commitment to rekindling the team’s past glories and connecting with the new generation of cricketers.

Focus on Team Identity and Improvement

As he steps into his new role, Pollard has outlined his priorities, stating that the team must first identify areas needing enhancement and work towards restoring its identity at the Wankhede Stadium. He acknowledged the franchise’s recent difficulties, noting that the Mumbai Indians have not secured an IPL title since their triumph in 2020. The team reached the playoffs in 2023 and 2025 but faced disappointing finishes, placing tenth in 2024 and ninth in 2026.

Pollard expressed a desire to see a strong presence of Mumbai Indians’ supporters at their home ground, stating that he does not wish to see fans wearing the colours of rival teams. He aims for the stadium to be filled with the team’s blue, representing the passion and spirit of their loyal fanbase. He believes that this atmosphere can only be achieved through the team’s collective effort and commitment.

Pollard articulated the importance of understanding what it means to represent the Mumbai Indians. He stated, “When you walk into the Wankhede Stadium, you are not seeing the yellows and the reds and stuff like that. You want to see that blue flag flying.” He emphasised that the responsibility lies with the team to reignite the passion that has historically defined the franchise.

Commitment to Team and Legacy

In his address, Pollard made it clear that the team must prioritise collective goals over individual ambitions. He stated that the players need to understand the significance of the badge they represent and the legacy they are part of. He acknowledged the challenges faced in recent years but stressed the importance of moving forward by learning from the past.

Pollard’s vision includes instilling a sense of pride and determination within the squad, ensuring that they play for the franchise and its supporters. He remarked, “What’s going to happen is that we’re going to try our best now to ensure that we continue to play for that badge, put the team above self.”

This commitment to unity and excellence is central to Pollard’s approach as he embarks on this new chapter with the Mumbai Indians. As the new season approaches, Pollard’s leadership will be crucial in guiding the Mumbai Indians back to their winning ways. His experience as a player and coach will be instrumental in shaping the team’s future and reconnecting with their dedicated fanbase.
