Tharoor Defends Gandhi Amidst BJP’s Allegations

Shashi Tharoor has responded to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks regarding Rahul Gandhi, asserting that the BJP’s focus on Gandhi indicates their concern about his rising popularity. Tharoor, speaking to NDTV on Friday, dismissed Modi’s characterisation of Gandhi as a “failed product” and argued that the BJP’s attempts to undermine Gandhi are a sign of his growing influence, particularly among younger voters.

During the NDTV World Summit held in Delhi, Tharoor urged the BJP to acknowledge the enthusiasm that Gandhi has generated in recent months. He stated, “On the contrary, I can tell you that I think Rahul Gandhi has ignited an enthusiasm, particularly amongst younger voters in the last few months, which I think the BJP would be well advised to sit up and pay attention to.”

Tharoor’s comments come in the wake of Modi’s speech at the summit, where he indirectly targeted Gandhi without naming him. Modi remarked, “I don’t know how long the Congress will continue to put the country at stake for the launch of its failed product.” He suggested that the frequency of Congress’s attempts to promote its leader was comparable to the launch schedule at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.

Congress Leadership and Internal Democracy

In response to Modi’s claims about the Congress party being burdened by the Nehru-Gandhi family, Tharoor expressed a contrasting viewpoint. He maintained that the Congress party is characterised by a significant degree of internal democracy. Tharoor pointed out that he has often shared differing opinions within the party yet remains an active member, serving in various capacities, including chairing a parliamentary committee on external affairs.

Tharoor remarked, “It’s not as if the mere fact that I may stand up and express different views makes me some sort of heretic or apostate.” His comments highlight the diversity of thought within the Congress party and challenge the notion that dissent is unwelcome.

Furthermore, Tharoor emphasised that the Congress party is prepared to engage with the BJP on important national issues. He stated, “When it comes to the key issues of the future of the nation, I believe that the kind of values the Congress Party stands for, the kind of politics it practices, and indeed its current principles and opposition unity are all principles and policies I can strongly support.”

Political Dynamics and Future Engagement

Tharoor’s remarks also addressed Modi’s assertion that the Congress party acts as a “parasite” obstructing progress. He argued that the voices of those opposing the government in a democratic manner are being stifled. Tharoor expressed confidence in the Congress party’s ability to challenge the ruling government effectively.

He concluded by asserting that the Congress party is ready to compete with the BJP on a level playing field, reinforcing the party’s commitment to democratic values and its readiness to confront the government on critical issues affecting the nation.

As the political landscape evolves, the exchanges between leaders from both parties are likely to intensify, reflecting the ongoing rivalry and differing visions for India’s future.
