IIT Kharagpur Launches Rs 35 Crore Initiative for Physical AI

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur has announced a significant initiative to establish the Benjamin Gupta School of Physical AI, backed by an investment of Rs 35 crore. This school is designed to bridge the gap between artificial intelligence and the physical world, moving beyond traditional data processing to a more comprehensive understanding of material behaviour and real-world applications.

This initiative was formalised through a tripartite memorandum of understanding (MoU) involving IIT Kharagpur, philanthropist Vinod Gupta, an alumnus of the institute, and the IITKGP Foundation USA. The school aims to integrate AI with disciplines such as physics, engineering, and biological systems, thereby enhancing the reliability of AI systems in practical scenarios.

The vision for the school is to develop AI technologies that not only recognise patterns but also comprehend the physical principles that govern their operation. This approach is intended to foster AI systems capable of functioning effectively in various real-world contexts.

Expanding AI’s Role Beyond Digital Interfaces

While much of the current discourse around AI focuses on digital tools like chatbots and image generators, the concept of Physical AI seeks to extend these capabilities into environments where physical laws and material properties play a crucial role. For instance, AI systems in manufacturing must consider how materials react under different conditions, while healthcare applications need to align with clinical understanding rather than relying solely on algorithmic outputs.

IIT Kharagpur plans to explore a range of research areas including physics-informed machine learning, scientific AI, and intelligent robotics. These areas will support advancements in sectors such as manufacturing, healthcare, agriculture, and climate technology.

The central premise is to create AI systems that can address complex problems by factoring in the physical principles relevant to their applications. This approach is expected to enhance the effectiveness and safety of AI technologies in various fields.

Funding and Infrastructure for the New School

The funding for this initiative will be sourced from multiple contributors. The Vinod Gupta family is set to provide Rs 12.5 crore, while an anonymous alumnus will contribute Rs 10 crore. IIT Kharagpur will cover the remaining costs. This financial backing will facilitate the development of dedicated infrastructure for the Department of Artificial Intelligence and related interdisciplinary research activities.

The school will honour the memory of Benjamin Gupta, the late son of Vinod Gupta, and aims to leverage IIT Kharagpur’s extensive expertise across various fields. The initiative seeks to foster collaboration among researchers, engineers, clinicians, and industry professionals to create AI applications that are practical and reliable.

Moreover, the institute has prioritised the development of safe and responsible AI, especially in applications where accountability and explainability are paramount. This focus is intended to ensure that AI technologies are not only effective but also trustworthy.

Educational Initiatives to Enhance AI Proficiency

In addition to research, the proposed school will also focus on education, aiming to reshape how students and professionals learn about AI. Academic programmes are expected to commence in the upcoming academic session, pending necessary approvals. Offerings will include hybrid-mode Master’s programmes, executive education, and professional certifications.

The educational initiatives are designed to cater to a diverse audience, including students, researchers, and working professionals from various fields. The school aims to serve as a finishing school, equipping individuals with the skills necessary to integrate AI into their respective domains effectively.

By emphasising interdisciplinary learning and practical applications, the school seeks to prepare engineers and medical professionals to understand the physical principles that underpin AI technologies. This comprehensive approach is expected to enhance the practical skills of graduates and ensure they are well-prepared for the evolving landscape of AI applications.
