The US State Department has approved a potential sale of support services and related equipment for Apache attack helicopters and M777 ultra-light Howitzers to India, valued at over $428 million. The estimated cost for Apache helicopters stands at approximately $198.2 million, which encompasses sustainment support services for the AH-64E Apache. Additionally, long-term sustainment support for the M777A2 ultra-light Howitzers is projected to be around $230 million.

Boeing and Lockheed Martin are identified as the primary contractors for the Apache support package. Furthermore, BAE Systems will be the principal contractor responsible for the support regarding the Howitzers. The sale includes a comprehensive range of services, covering engineering, technical, and logistics support, personnel training, and other related logistics and program assistance.

The Indian government has formally requested various sustainment support services relevant to the AH-64E Apache, including technical data, personnel training, and additional logistical elements. Similarly, for the M777 Howitzers, the support package consists of ancillary items, spares, repair services, and technical assistance.

Implications for US-India Relations

The US State Department has indicated that this proposed sale is significant for reinforcing the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States. It aims to strengthen the strategic relationship between the US and India, which is recognised as a key defence partner contributing to political stability and economic growth in the Indo-Pacific and South Asia regions.

This sale is anticipated to enhance India’s capacity to address current and future security challenges. It is expected to bolster the nation’s homeland defence while deterring potential regional threats. The US government underlined that India possesses the capability to effectively integrate these items and services into its military framework.

Moreover, the transaction reflects the growing defence collaboration between the two nations and underscores India’s aim to modernise its military capabilities in line with contemporary warfare standards.
