Union Minister Sonowal Greenlights Rs 117.54 Crore Project for Bascule Bridge Renovation at Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port

Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, has officially sanctioned the renovation of the historic Bascule Bridge located at Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata, with an investment estimated at Rs 117.54 crore. This decision was made public on March 10 and marks a significant step towards enhancing the port’s operational capabilities.

Details of the Proposal

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways disclosed that the renovation proposal was reviewed by the Delegated Investment Board (DIB) during a meeting held on February 16, 2026. This board, chaired by the Secretary of the Ministry, meticulously assessed the need for updates to the nearly sixty-year-old bridge, which plays a crucial role in the Kolkata Dock System (KDS).

Funding and Financial Assistance

The total spending for the project amounts to Rs 117.54 crore, which includes around Rs 41 crore provided under the Sagarmala Programme. The Ministry underscored that this initiative represents a substantial investment aimed at modernizing the vital infrastructure of the port.

Objectives of the Renovation

The primary goal of the renovation is to modernize the historic double-leaf Bascule Bridge, thereby ensuring safer and more efficient movement of cargo and vehicles within the port area. Enhancements will include comprehensive structural and electro-mechanical upgrades to bolster both operational safety and efficiency.

Implementation Details

The renovation project will be executed by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited, with H & H Fressinet awarded the contract for carrying out the necessary works. The undertaking is expected to result in improved operational efficiencies within the Kolkata Dock System.
