Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has publicly expressed his shame regarding the prolonged delays in the widening of the Mumbai-Goa Highway. During the inauguration of a new six-lane elevated road corridor in Porvorim, near Panaji, on Wednesday, Gadkari stated that he would not attend the inauguration ceremony for the highway once its completion was finally realised. He remarked on the repeated setbacks in completing this crucial infrastructure project, indicating that the delays were a matter of significant concern for him.

Inspections and Future Actions

In the same address, Gadkari mentioned that a meeting had been convened with officials to discuss the highway’s status. He confirmed plans to personally inspect the highway in October, stating, “I would land at the Mumbai airport in October and travel by road to Goa to personally inspect the highway and assess whether the journey has been made convenient for travellers.”

This inspection aims to evaluate the highway’s conditions, particularly after significant delays in its development. Gadkari’s proactive approach underscores his commitment to addressing the issues faced by commuters along this route.

The Minister also signalled a determination to tackle the inefficiencies associated with the project. He announced intentions to take strict actions against both contractors and officials who have contributed to the delays and inefficiencies in executing infrastructure projects. He specifically mentioned a desire to “set a record” for blacklisting contractors and suspending responsible officials within a year.

Ongoing Challenges with the Highway

The Mumbai-Goa Highway widening project spans approximately 440 kilometres and has experienced multiple delays over the years, despite considerable financial investment. Reports indicate that parts of the recently upgraded sections have developed potholes and surface damage following the first rains of the monsoon season. Such issues raise concerns about the quality of the work completed thus far.

Moreover, ongoing diversions, waterlogging, necessary repairs, and traffic congestion continue to plague users of the highway. These challenges persist even after toll collection commenced at the Kharpada toll plaza in May, casting further doubt on the road’s readiness for public use.

Additionally, a safety issue has emerged following the collapse of a monkey overpass near the Kannala Animal Sanctuary, built in 2021. This incident has raised alarms regarding wildlife safety and the overall reliability of infrastructure along the highway.
