UK PM Andy Burnham Commits 15 Per Cent Of Salary To Combat Homelessness

The CSR Journal Magazine

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has announced his intention to contribute 15 per cent of his salary to homeless charities, marking a significant facet of his resolve to eradicate rough sleeping across the nation. This commitment was made during his initial month in the role, after taking office from Keir Starmer on 20 July.

Burnham has actively employed social media platforms over the past month to emphasise various measures his government is undertaking, especially regarding the cost-of-living crisis and other pressing public issues. His proactive approach aims to engage citizens and raise awareness about these critical matters.

In an interview with the Big Issue, a publication dedicated to supporting homeless individuals, Burnham expressed his continued commitment to philanthropy, drawing from his past experiences as the mayor of Greater Manchester. He indicated his intent to replicate the practice of donating a portion of his earnings while serving in his new role.

Details of the Donation

Burnham revealed that he has been donating 15 per cent of his salary for nearly a decade, specifically to initiatives addressing homelessness in Greater Manchester. Now, as Prime Minister, he plans to extend this practice to the additional salary associated with his new position. He stated that he wishes to lead by example and will contribute part of his parliamentary earnings towards local organisations aimed at supporting homeless individuals.

He expressed his strong sentiments against the normalisation of seeing individuals sleeping rough on the streets, emphasising the need for collective action on this issue. Burnham believes that the potential for improvement exists, citing tangible progress made during the COVID-19 pandemic as proof that collaborative efforts can yield results.

The estimated amount Burnham intends to donate exceeds Rs 26 lakhs, which will benefit local causes in his Makerfield constituency and various homeless charities. Lord John Bird, the founder of the Big Issue, commended Burnham’s initiative, highlighting it as a significant leadership example that reinforces the collective responsibility in combating homelessness.

Government Actions and Objectives

Alongside his personal commitments, Burnham’s government has begun implementing various policies aimed at alleviating financial pressures faced by citizens. Within his first month in office, he has taken steps such as reducing taxes on electricity bills, capping bus fares at Rs 200 in England, and streamlining processes for cancelling subscriptions. He has also expressed determination to tackle misleading discounts.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister has prioritised advancements in technical education, announced the opening of 159 new mental health centres, and implemented support measures for farmers affected by drought conditions resulting from recent heatwaves. He has also initiated cuts in business rates for pubs, clubs, and music venues as part of a broader plan to stimulate local economies.

Burnham has articulated his aspiration to deliver what he describes as the “largest transfer of power, funding, and responsibility from Westminster in a generation.” This ambition is part of his ongoing consultations with the public regarding their economic and social concerns, which will ultimately contribute towards a comprehensive ten-year plan aimed for release by the end of the year.
