Udaipur Baby Swap Row Continues: DNA Report Awaits to Confirm Infants’ Identities

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a strange incident of a baby swap at Udaipur’s MB Hospital, a dispute has arisen between two families, each of them claiming that the newborn boy belongs to them. As per hospital records, both a baby boy and a baby girl were born 43 minutes apart on October 21. In order to settle the dispute, DNA samples from the parents of both infants were sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory in Jaipur for confirmation.

What is the issue?

The issue started on October 21, when two women named Anita Rawat, hailing from Udaipur, and Rameshwari Soni from Chittorgarh, gave birth to a baby boy and a baby girl in the same operation theatre at MB Hospital in Udaipur, just 43 minutes apart. While one family claims that they were handed over a baby boy initially, the hospital staff later took back the infant and handed over a baby girl. Anita’s husband, Sunil, said, “We objected and lodged a complaint at Hathi Pole police station. With police intervention, forensic teams collected DNA samples from both sets of parents.”

The Rawat family further noted that they have no problem accepting the girl child, but only after the DNA report arrives. “We do not want to deprive the babies of their mother’s milk. So, we decided to feed the baby girl. The DNA report will come in 15 days. Until then, we will stay here with the baby girl in the hospital ward,” noted Sunil.

Irony of the situation

The situation worsened when both the Soni and Rawat families refused to accept the newborn baby girl, arguing that they already have daughters. This incident hasn’t been seen in a good light and has ignited public outrage. People are pointing out that despite government campaigns and claims, there is still a preference for male children over female children.

The episode has drawn more outrage as it happened during Diwali, a festival where Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped—the embodiment of wealth and prosperity—while at the same time, a newborn girl struggles for acceptance.

Hospital Confirms Correct Parents After Probe

A Day after the shocking incident, MB Hospital Superintendent Dr. R.L. Suman shared that the hospital conducted a thorough investigation and confirmed the identity of the infants. The parents have also agreed to the findings. Anita Rawat from Udaipur was handed her daughter, while Rameshwari Soni received her son.

Dr. Suman confirmed that an investigation committee has been constituted to examine the lapses and negligence that led to such a major error. “After the investigation, appropriate action will be taken against the person responsible,” he said.
