Details of the Scam

A young man from Faridabad has reportedly lost Rs 89,750 after falling victim to a scam on Facebook that promised employment as a gigolo. The fraudsters allegedly collected money from him in nine separate instalments, citing various registration and related expenses. Following the incident, the victim lodged a complaint with the Faridabad Cyber Crime Branch, prompting the police to register a case and initiate an investigation.

According to the complaint filed by the victim, he received a friend request on Facebook a few months prior, which led to an offer for gigolo work. The individuals behind this offer initially requested Rs 1,200 for registration, assuring him that he could earn between Rs 20,000 and Rs 30,000 for each client visit. This enticing proposition motivated the young man to proceed with the payment.

After the initial payment, the scammers continued to demand further funds. They requested Rs 18,000 for a massage kit, followed by additional payments exceeding Rs 6,000 each for a special deluxe room card and a hotel room scanner card. The total amount collected from the victim reached Rs 89,750, with the fraudsters justifying each payment with various claims related to the job offer.

Delays and Realisation

After making the payments, the victim inquired about when he would begin receiving client visits. In response, the scammers repeatedly postponed the start date, initially asking him to wait for two days, then extending the wait to four days at a time. As time passed, the victim became increasingly anxious and frustrated, especially after more than two months had elapsed without any client visits.

Realising that he had been deceived, the young man contacted the cybercrime helpline at 1930 to report the incident. He informed the authorities that he was experiencing significant financial difficulties and had perceived the gigolo job as a quick and easy way to earn money. This unfortunate experience has left him in a precarious financial situation.

In response to the complaint, the Faridabad Police stated that the Cyber Crime Police Station is actively working to identify the individuals involved in the scam. They have assured that legal action will be taken against the perpetrators once their identities are confirmed. The police are currently gathering evidence and information to facilitate the investigation.

Impact on Victim and Community

This incident highlights the growing prevalence of online scams, particularly those targeting individuals seeking employment. The victim’s experience serves as a cautionary tale for others who may be drawn to similar offers on social media platforms. Authorities emphasise the importance of verifying job offers and being cautious when sharing personal information online.

As the investigation unfolds, the Faridabad Cyber Crime Branch aims to raise awareness about such fraudulent activities. They encourage individuals to report suspicious job offers and scams promptly to prevent further victimisation. The police are committed to enhancing community safety and protecting citizens from financial fraud.

The case underscores the necessity for increased vigilance among internet users. It is essential for individuals to remain informed about potential scams and to approach job offers with a critical mindset. The authorities continue to work diligently to combat cybercrime and safeguard the interests of the public.
