Violence Escalates in Manipur’s Kamjong District Amid Ongoing Tensions

The CSR Journal Magazine

Violence in Manipur’s Kamjong district intensified on Saturday, resulting in three individuals sustaining injuries during a gunfight. This escalation follows an earlier incident involving armed groups from the Kuki and Naga communities in Chassad, where a 36-year-old Kuki man was reportedly killed and four others injured. The police confirmed that the attack on a Tangkhul Naga village in Kamjong was likely a retaliation for the earlier violence.

According to police reports, the injured individuals were identified as T. Chithung from Ningchou, and S. Malung and M. Shithung from Bungpa Khullen. All three were transported to Kamjong Hospital for medical treatment following the gunfight. The situation remains tense as community members express concern over the ongoing violence.

Eyewitness accounts suggest that the Kuki militants, allegedly in collaboration with narco-terrorists, initiated unprovoked heavy firing towards civilian areas in Kamjong headquarters around 2.30 pm. This action reportedly instilled fear and panic among the local Tangkhul population, prompting calls for urgent intervention.

Allegations Against Assam Rifles Personnel

A statement released by the Naga Village Guard-Eastern Command (NVG-EC) accused personnel from the 11 Assam Rifles of assisting the Kuki militants during the attack. The statement claimed that the Assam Rifles advanced into the area using two Casspir vehicles while engaging in heavy firing and deploying stun bombs towards civilian locations. This led to damage to properties in the vicinity of Kamjong town, further aggravating the already volatile situation.

Local residents expressed their shock at the alleged involvement of security forces in the violence, raising questions about the role of law enforcement in maintaining peace and order. The community is now facing uncertainty as tensions continue to rise between the two groups.

As the situation unfolds, the police have reported a lack of manpower, which has hindered their ability to respond effectively to the violence. The authorities are under pressure to ensure the safety of civilians amidst these escalating conflicts.

Destruction of Tangkhul Naga Villages

In a related development, two Tangkhul Naga villages, Skipe and Pilong, were reportedly set ablaze by suspected Kuki armed militants. These villages are situated near the Indo-Myanmar border, complicating the response efforts of local law enforcement. A senior police officer indicated that the lack of available personnel has delayed their arrival at the scene.

Fortunately, no casualties have been reported in connection with the arson incident. However, the destruction of the villages adds to the growing list of grievances between the Kuki and Naga communities, further entrenching the divisions that have led to ongoing violence in the region.

The situation in Manipur remains precarious, with both communities on high alert. Local leaders are calling for dialogue and peace initiatives to prevent further escalation of violence. The authorities are urged to take immediate action to restore order and protect the lives and properties of civilians caught in the conflict.
