Twin Violence Erupts in Murshidabad on Eve of Polling

The CSR Journal Magazine

On the eve of polling, Murshidabad experienced heightened tension following a late-night bombing incident in the Shibnagar area of the Nawda Assembly constituency. The explosion allegedly involved a series of crude bombs thrown onto a roadway, instilling fear among local residents. Reports confirm that a woman sustained injuries due to the blasts, but her condition is said to be stable.

The incident has raised significant concerns, given its proximity to a polling station. The blast occurred just 50 metres from Shibnagar Primary School, designated as a polling booth for the upcoming elections. Despite the presence of central forces in the area, this occurrence has drawn scrutiny regarding existing security measures.

Trinamool Congress (TMC) Member of Parliament Abu Taher Khan attributed the incident to alleged miscreants associated with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP). He suggested that the bombing was deliberately orchestrated under the cover of night to intimidate voters.

Following the explosions, police and central forces arrived at the scene and increased patrolling efforts. Officials reported that the situation has been brought under control, with heightened vigilance implemented as polling day approaches. Khan visited the site later to express his protest against the incident. Notably, TMC candidate Sahina Mumtaz Khan was in the vicinity at the time, though she was unharmed.

Prior Tensions and Clashes in Shibnagar

Tensions in the Nawda area had been escalating prior to these incidents. Merely a day before the bombing, TMC accused AJUP supporters of attacking two of its workers in Shibnagar. This history of violence has contributed to an anxious atmosphere in the region as the polls draw near.

The incidents highlight a broader pattern of unrest in Murshidabad, where political rivalries have often led to conflict. The local climate has been charged with heightened emotions as various factions prepare for the elections, raising alarms over the potential for more violence.

With polling scheduled for the next day, the occurrence of violence and intimidation has only amplified the challenges facing security forces in the area. Community leaders and local officials have expressed the need for a peaceful electoral process to ensure that citizens can exercise their democratic rights safely.

Violence in Domkal Further Escalates Tensions

Adding to the unrest in the district, another violent clash was reported in the Domkal block, further intensifying anxiety ahead of voting. Late at night, confrontations between CPI(M) and TMC supporters in the Sardarpara area of Raipur escalated, resulting in injuries to at least three individuals from both sides.

Among the injured, one CPI(M) worker is reportedly in critical condition. Eyewitness accounts suggest that a disagreement between the two factions rapidly devolved into confrontational violence, with both sides employing sharp weapons. Local residents intervened, transporting the injured to Domkal Super Specialty Hospital for urgent medical treatment.

As polling day looms, these twin incidents of violence have heightened political tensions in Murshidabad, raising further concerns regarding law and order in the region. Security arrangements will face scrutiny as officials aim to ensure a safe and orderly electoral process in light of these recent disturbances.
