TVK Chief Vijay Criticises MK Stalin Over Rising Crime in Tamil Nadu

The CSR Journal Magazine

Recent incidents of crime, including attacks on infants and elderly women, have prompted Tamil Nadu Vizhuthugal Katchi (TVK) leader Vijay to criticize the state government for its failure to ensure public safety. In a statement on X, Vijay expressed that citizens are increasingly disillusioned with the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party, suggesting that the public wishes to see a change in leadership. He addressed Chief Minister MK Stalin directly, questioning the government’s priorities regarding the safety of women and children in the state.

Demand for Action Amidst Rising Violence

Vijay pointed to several troubling crime incidents in recent days to underscore his concerns. Among the reported cases is the murder of a 17-year-old girl in Thoothukudi, which he described in harrowing detail, stating that her remains were discovered mutilated. He indicated that the murder has sparked significant protests in her locality, with her parents alleging police negligence contributed to their daughter’s death. They are calling for the arrest of those responsible and accountability from law enforcement.

Highlighting Specific Crimes

In addition to the tragic case of the young girl, Vijay drew attention to the murder of an elderly couple, noting that the 60-year-old woman was also sexually assaulted. He expressed concern that the nature of these crimes suggests that safety is a widespread issue, transcending age and gender lines. Furthermore, he referenced attacks on political figures, including a petrol bomb incident involving Karti Chidambaram, a member of Parliament and son of senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram.

Critique on Food Safety

Beyond violent incidents, Vijay raised alarms about food safety standards in schools in Tamil Nadu. He highlighted a recent incident in Coimbatore where 43 students fell ill after a lizard was found in their food. This incident has added to the chorus of concerns regarding the administration’s ability to safeguard public health and safety.

Political Implications Ahead of Elections

As Tamil Nadu approaches its elections, scheduled for April or May, all political parties are ramping up their campaigning efforts. Vijay’s TVK is expected to contest independently, marking its first foray into state elections. The DMK-led alliance, which includes Congress, is finalizing seat-sharing arrangements. In the previous elections held in 2021, the DMK secured a significant victory, winning 159 seats, with the DMK alone holding 133, while its main rival, the AIADMK, gained 60 seats, and the BJP claimed 4.
