Trump to be Removed? Calls for Impeachment Rise Following Trump’s Civilisation Warning

The CSR Journal Magazine

US President Donald Trump issued a dramatic warning, claiming that “a whole civilisation will die tonight,” leading to intensified calls for his impeachment from Democratic lawmakers. This statement, shared on Truth Social, raised alarms about potential nuclear escalation, coinciding with a two-week ceasefire announcement between Washington and Tehran. The warning came ahead of a deadline set by Trump for Iran to negotiate a deal and reopen the vital Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global oil shipments.

Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez responded vehemently, labelling the statement as a potential threat of genocide that warrants the President’s removal. She expressed concerns regarding Trump’s mental fitness, suggesting that individuals in his administration have a duty to reject any unlawful orders issued by him.

Despite the ceasefire declaration occurring later in the day, pressure on Trump remained unabated, with several lawmakers asserting that the brief halt in hostilities does not alleviate the serious implications of his earlier remarks. Representative Melanie Stansbury argued that an agreement for a ceasefire does not equate to being fit for presidential responsibilities and invoked the 25th Amendment in her remarks on social media.

Momentum for Impeachment Grows Among Lawmakers

Calls for impeachment had started to gain traction even before Trump’s alarming statement. Representative John Larson introduced articles of impeachment on April 5, alleging Trump’s systematic deviation from congressional war powers, and accusing him of actions amounting to murder, war crimes, and piracy. This action underscored the dissatisfaction among many Democrats regarding Trump’s handling of international relations.

Representative Ilhan Omar also advocated for urgent impeachment, questioning when Republican leaders would take decisive action against Trump. Moreover, Representative Ro Khanna pushed for the invocation of Section 4 of the 25th Amendment, arguing that Trump’s threats posed existential risks and necessitated immediate action by Congress.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi added her voice to the chorus, asserting that Trump must be ousted “one way or another,” and urging either the Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment or for Congress to reconvene to address the ongoing crisis.

White House Response and Republican Division

The White House responded to the backlash by branding the criticism as “pathetic.” Spokesperson Davis Ingle asserted that Democrats have perpetually sought to impeach Trump, even prior to his inauguration, and reiterated that Trump remains focused on fulfilling his agenda, which is backed by a significant voter base.

Despite the overall support for Trump among Republicans, some members voiced discomfort with his language. Senator Lisa Murkowski remarked that the President’s claim that “a whole civilisation will die tonight” is indefensible in negotiations. Furthermore, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene labelled the statement as “evil and madness,” endorsing actions to invoke the 25th Amendment.

Senator Ron Johnson expressed hope that Trump’s remarks were merely bluster, asserting a desire to avoid aggression towards the Iranian populace. Similarly, Representative Nathaniel Moran distanced himself from the President’s rhetoric, stating that such a stance does not align with American values.

Impeachment Prospects Remain Dim

Despite the escalating pressure, the likelihood of Trump facing removal from office appears minimal. The Republican party maintains control of both houses of Congress, and there is no evident dissent within his Cabinet, which is essential for invoking the 25th Amendment. This constitutional provision demands substantial consensus, including backing from the vice president and a majority of the Cabinet, followed by a two-thirds majority vote in Congress if contested.

Trump, who has faced impeachment twice previously during his first term without conviction, continues to enjoy robust support from his party members, complicating the landscape for any potential removal efforts.
