President Trump Proposes Seizing Iranian Oil Amid Military Tensions

The CSR Journal Magazine

U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed intentions to “take the oil in Iran,” indicating that the United States might consider seizing Kharg Island, a crucial hub for Iran’s oil exports. This assertion comes as thousands of American troops are being deployed to the Middle East in response to the escalating U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran. Recent analyses have considered Kharg Island a potential military target for the U.S.

In a recent interview with the Financial Times, Trump commented, “To be honest with you, my favourite thing is to take the oil in Iran, but some stupid people back in the U.S. say: ‘Why are you doing that?’ But they’re stupid people.” Such operations could heighten military tensions and disrupt global energy markets, especially since Kharg Island is vital for Iran’s oil exports. Brent crude prices have already surged, topping $116 a barrel in recent trading as the conflict intensifies.

The President noted that the Pentagon is contemplating multiple military strategies. “Maybe we take Kharg Island, maybe we don’t. We have a lot of options,” he stated, adding that any such action would likely require a sustained military presence. When questioned about Iran’s defensive capabilities, Trump expressed confidence, saying, “I don’t think they have any defence. We could take it very easily.”

In preparation for potential operations, the Pentagon has dispatched approximately 10,000 troops trained for such missions. This includes about 3,500 personnel, with around 2,200 Marines having already arrived in the area, and an additional 2,200 Marines on their way. More troops from the 82nd Airborne Division are also set to deploy as the U.S. gears up for possible escalated military engagements.

However, military experts caution that an assault on Kharg Island carries significant risks, which could lead to U.S. casualties and extended conflict while threatening a crucial global oil supply route. The situation has further complicated following attacks on U.S. air bases, including one in Saudi Arabia, which resulted in injuries to 12 American soldiers and significant damage to equipment. Additionally, Houthi rebels have launched missile attacks directed at Israel, triggering fears of further escalations in the region.

In spite of the military tensions, Trump mentioned that indirect negotiations with Iran, facilitated through intermediaries from Pakistan, are progressing. He stated that he had set a deadline of April 6 for Iran to negotiate a deal to end hostilities or face military strikes on its energy infrastructure.

When asked about a potential ceasefire and the reopening of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, Trump refrained from providing specifics, instead stating that “we’ve got about 3,000 targets left” to address.

He claimed that Iran had granted safe passage to additional oil tankers flying the Pakistani flag as an act of goodwill during ongoing talks. Trump noted that Iranian parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf had personally sanctioned this arrangement, highlighting that Iran is navigating a significant leadership transition following the deaths of key figures in recent conflicts.

Trump asserted that the current Iranian leadership represents a stark change, reiterating suspicions about the status of Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the late supreme leader. He suggested that Khamenei might be dead or gravely injured, stating, “We’ve not heard from him at all. He’s gone.”
